I've had my guitar for about a month. I learned some basic chords and practiced them so I could switch quickly between them.. but when I found this site.. it says I should play D like this:

- - o - - -
| | | | | |
| | | 1 | 2
| | | | 3 |
| | | | | |
- - - - - -

But I've been playing it like this:

- - o - - -
| | | | | |
| | | 2 | 1
| | | | 3 |
| | | | | |
- - - - - -

Should I switch? I like the way I do it since it allows me to switch to Dmin very easily. The other way seems like it should make some other transitions easier.

If it ain't broke.... don't fix it.

When it comes to fingering chords, you really have to go with what makes the most sense to you. Try it both ways and settle for the one that works the best in the most situations.

There are numerous ways to play chords, at the end of the day it's completely up2 U how u finger them. I agree with ston if it ain't broke don't fix it. You may wish to try bar chords 2 though, i've just started learning how to play these and find moving to different chords like D7, Dm, D# etc even easier. Just a thought and it depends somewhat on what type of music you are trying to play. This is slightly more suited to the alternative genre, ballads generally use open chords like you are playing but again its preference on the part of the artist. Hope i haven't oversimplified for you my friend.http://www.zentao.com/ubb/smilies/metalhead.gif

Funny that, I mostly play it like...

- o o - - -
| | | | | |
T | | 1 1 1
| | | | 3 |
| | | | | |
- - - - - -

T=thumb

or something like that, havn't got a guitar handy at work and its hard to visualize something ya do without looking sometimes.
