Has anyone tried bone or ivory bridge pegs. I was wondering if they are worth the money. Do they actually have enough effect on tone. I have used bone in my nut and saddle, and I tried a saddle made of TUSQ, a manmade substance, meant to mimic ivory. I screwed up my bone nut and saddle trying to lower the action so I have to have the guitar setup again. I want to get the guitar completely set up with bone in the nut and saddle and I may add bone or ivory or wood bridge pegs. Anyone have any info on this?

I like the sound of bone in the nut and saddle. It is a lot richer and fuller than the plastic that came with the guitar.

I'm afraid if I use real bone my dog would chew my guitar up to get to it! :o

I can't say that I've tried bone vs plastic (or whatever material the nuts and bridges are made of) so I don't know the difference in sound.

I just wonder why brass isn't used on acoustics, or would it not transfer the sound through the body as well? I may have just answered my own question, I do that quite often since I AM so entellujunt  :p so 'nevermind' :toohappy: :toohappy: <this dude ain't got no bones!!

I believe I saw brass bridge pens somewhere on the web.

I read somewhere that brass for nuts (not brass balls t_shirt :) ) was popular in the '50s, but it acted like a tone-sink, so people stopped using 'em.

Well, I've recently taken an acoustic with plastic on the pins, nut, and saddle and swapped em out for ebony pins and bone everything else... NIGHT AND DAY DIFFERENCE. Absolutely no comparison. For this reason, when I look at (lower-end) acoustics, I judge them on feel, material, and balance, because more often than not they can correct out into some very nice-sounding instruments, especially Ibanezs by my experience. Problem is, you can't add highs or lows and you sure can't make it NOT made of laminate, so you really have to weigh what's important when shopping for acoustics. Also, if you're not planning on making your own nut (best idea I think), look for a Gibson acoustic nut... they have better nuts than Taylors and Martins and what have you by a lot.

Bassman...

There is a cheaper and easier way of getting hold of some very strong bridge pins...

My guitar has Ivorex bridge pins and saddle, and this stuff is apparently stronger than bone.

Personally, I would not like a dead animal holding in my strings...
