I don't know what else to call these things. They're almost like a POD for the acoustic guitar but what they really do is make the piezo pickup sound coming from an electric acoustic sound more like a miked guitar. They even have emulations of different types of guitars (dreadnought, jumbo, dobro, etc.). From the mp3s I've listend to online, Yamaha seems to have a really nice one. Boss has a high dollar model with no mp3s to listen to, but Boss usually makes a very good product. The best I've heard online is the Fishman (no surprise there).

Any experiences/opinions?

Yeah, Taylor is making one too. I had a plugin pre-amp with eq that worked very nicely with one guitar I had with only the bridge thinline and no pre. But when I got my Taylors I gave the pre-amp to a friend who needed it.
