So what's everyone think about the high number of popular acoustic guys out right now (IE Jack Johnson, John Mayer...) I tend to like Jack the best, i think he's got the perfect chill music, i play it when i sit down to do some Calc II homework, lol...what do you all think?

Yea... I don't have much current acoustic stuff. I just listen to my dylan or unplugged albums or something. I like Jack Johnson alright though. I respect John Mayer as a guitarist and even think he is a pretty cool guy, but his music isn't my favorite... doesn't bother me though.

I heard Jack Johnson a bit at a music store and it restored my faith in upcoming artists. I thought he was just incredible compared to the crap that passes as music these days!

yea, i have all three of Jack Johnsons ablums, he's a real beast on an acoustic, real mellow and funny as hell, he had a video for Taylor that got no airplay, but Ben Stiller was in it cuz i guess Bens a big fan...it was so funny

i love john mayer, which you know if you've read some other threads i've posted in about this. People call him a dave matthews wannabe or whatever, but i really like his style. He is an exeptional guitar player, especially if you've ever heard him live, and his lyrics are original and clever. ofcourse this is just my opinion and i'm sure others disagree, but yeah

i like jack johnson alot too, just bought his newest cd recently. ben harper is another one of my favorite "chill" musicians

Accoustic alchemy? Sounds like a band I might be interested in...reminds me of this one band I tried to form, but it didn't work out. Transportation issues, you know...

Jack Johnson is great! Hes got the coolest lyrics(that make no sense) as in "her eyes are as big as her bubbley toes". AWESOME MAN

Not a Jack Johnson fan...not enough variation among his songs...they all sound the same to me. He isn't bad, though, I just can't listen to him for more than a few minutes.

Dave Matthews used to be one of my favorites, but I burned out on them from listening to them too much, plus their newest stuff hasn't been up to par.

I recommend:
Dispatch
Ben Folds (even though it's not guitar and it's not all acoustic)

Jack Johnson is very good, but it got stale real quick for me. The song's blended to well into each with not enough variation. I like Nickle Creek they are all earlier 20 somthing's and have been together for 10 years. One guitar one Mandolin and one violin. Amazing stuff.

I'm with Bugman-Dispatch and Ben Folds are great

Ben Harper is OK, gotta be in the mood
I'm already burned out on Jack Johnson
Tenacious D still rocks the house - Kyle Gass is an amazing guitarist even though you can't take them seriously

Dave Matthews, John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Damien Rice, etc. I learned everything I could from these guys when I first started playing. Now I'm maturing into the electric side of things.

I haven't seen Damien Rice mentioned yet so check him out, he is a very unique musician. Also check out Monte Mongomery, he does things with an acoustic people only dream of doing with an electric.

I dont think much of the newer acoustic artists I have listened to are any good compaired to the older acoustic players like Dylan and Cat Stevens and so on. There are some good songs from more current acoustic artists but I don't think they match up.

Yeah, there's a few current artists,

Dave Matthews is probably my favourite, he usually plays acoustic, he has some great riffs and chord progressions that aren't really the norm.

Jack Johnson I quite like, saw him live last year...I got into his stuff as soon as Brushfire Fairytales came out, I wasn't a huge fan of his second album, but In Between Dreams is good.
A few other names, Ben Harper, John Butler, Xavier Rudd, Dispatch, G-Love,

I used to love just downloading Acoustic stuff from grunge and metal bands, I love Metallica, AIC, Megadeth, all that stuff on acoustic.

Anyone familiar with Kaki King?

She is kind of on the Michael hedges, Leo Kottke kind of style, but she is young and absolutely brilliant. Do check her out when possible.
