While I'm not really a bass player, I do enjoy jamming on one of my friends basses when I get the chance.
But anyway, I'm starting a band with this guy who's new to bass playing and while he has lots of motivation and his playing is fine, his tone is awful. Do any of you have any tips on getting a punchier tone? We play funky jazz metal with horns and the bass parts are simple, but need to stand out more.

what is his EQ settings at the moment?

I play with bass and treble boosted and a slight scoop on the mids. That seems to give me a fairly pumchy tone however it may not work for him. You could try boosting the mids :hmmm:

Also what rig is he playing through and what bass is he using?
