View Full Version : Beringher Ultra Bass?

Our bassist is looking for a new rig, but is on a bit of a tight budget.

Now I have access to one the "Ultra bass" amps by Beringher (brand new). I've heard it in action and it really rocks. It's £600 for the head, 2x10 and the 1x15. However he could get just the head and the 1x15 for £400 and get the 2x10 at a later date.

Reason i'm posting is because i've heard a lot of people have negative opinions of Beringher. The guy in my local store is a bassist, he uses one of these amps and says it's reliable and is a great "bang for the buck" amp. The amp seems pretty good to me, anyone got any experience with these beasts?

Yes, incredibly horrible sounding amps. Worst bass amps I have ever heard. I couldn't believe the price, thought it was too good to be true, then I plugged in and realized it WAS too good to be true. Just awful.

Like I said, absolutley the worst bass amp I'd ever heard.

PS: Bottom of the barrel in tone = Behringer and Crate. Crate is above Behringer. That says it all.

So everything is negative then?

I wouldn't mind some advice about what else to look for...(HINT HINT!) and keep price in mind!

I have nothing to good to say bout Behringer... I would suggest trying to get a good used rig. I am sure there are some good deals out your way.

Hmn, The reviews for the amp on Harmony Central are all really positive...

Honestly, reviews are not worth much on the net. What is great to one is crap to another. Nothing beats going to the store and spending some GOOD time in front of the amp. Not just plug in and play but actually put the amp through a good test. Who knows, your bass player may like it or hate it but do spend some time trying it out so you don't regret it afterwards ;)

That's because they bought the amp. You have to like it to buy it.

People are idiots. Internet reviews are useless for the most part.

Yea, most people aren't exactly gonna make out that they spent their hard earned money on a piece of junk. Oh and btw £400 is not a very good price.

I would say to pick up a nice used amp.....you really get what you pay for with heads and cabs.. if your bassist is really on a budget...aren't we all! .....maybe consider a combo. they generally run cheaper...
Best names...ashdown,eden, G.K. Ampeg, I run a Hartke system that is more of a midrange product... but I love it.
Peavy, Crate and Behr might be good for playing down the basement with some friends.....thats about it......,my 2 cents tallpaul

£600 'ey. I got my Ashdown MAG rig with 2 by 10 and 1 by 15 for less than that. Mind you that was on the net and you could probs find the behringer cheaper on the net

In harmony central, torres amps can get 8/10 for sound, and a crate could get a 9.6/10. This paradox is due to the beginner users liking the sound of their budget amps and never knowing how a really expensive amp sounds, and the advanced users having tried many expensive amps and being able to differentiate between the sounds of vintage amps.

Also, peoples opinions are biased because they spent all that money on their amp, and they want to give it a better review than it deserves

Therefore, harmony central reviews are pretty much useless unless its from an experienced amp reviewer or something.

You will only know if an amp is right for you if you go and test it yourself

Behringer gets a bad rap because of snob appeal, and this absurd idea that rip you off more is better. I have a behringer 3000t Ultrabass that I got for a backup to my Hartke 4000. It kicked the HArtkes a$$ so bad I got rid of the Hartke. I have a lot of Behringer stuff, and it is fantastic. Some of the worst crap out there has brand names on it, and some of the best gems are non advertising companies that can sell gear far cheaper because they depend on word of mouth rather than taking out ads in magazines... which, when you buy gear, lets face it, you help pay for....

Behringer is not the bottom of the barrell. They're not great, but they're not terrible. If you buy one of those big new cabs, just make sure to buy a head that's not Behringer.

A friend of mine has one of the big cabs with a Gallen-Kreuger head. It sounds pretty nice.

I gotta disagree totally. I have a lot of behringer stuff, and the reason I have it is not the price, it is the quality, it is just very high end stuff. The fact it is also reasonably inexpensive is icing on the cake.
I suggest the Behringer Ultrabass over a lot of other choices. Like I say, when I got mine I got rid of my Hartke, the Behringer kicked it's ***.

Yeah, I have a Behringer 120W ultrabass. It's nice. I had to send back the first one though because the speaker buzzed alot. If anyone else is going to buy one just don't be afraid to send it back. Zzounds replaced mine no problem.

Behringer buys their speakers from other manufactureres. My Behringer guitar amp has a Jensen in it.
I have just a Behringer head, I built my own cabs for it.

I have the Behringer head with Avatar Cab. This thing rocks, but I use it as guitar amp. I am transitioning to bass playing soon. I'm sure this thing wont fail me.

My friend has a Behringer bass amp (don't remember what model, but it's a fairly cheap 60W one) and it's not bad.

I just have to tell this, because it sounds so ultimately ridiculous, but it's the truth! A couple years ago we played a gig at Churchill Downs and I didn't have an amp for my bass - period. And I didn't have the money to buy one. So my husband took the amp for our stereo system, a 500W Kenwood, and hooked it up to a 15 inch EV monitor that we had and I played the whole gig through that! And I almost cried when that Kenwood fried, cause I just kept using it for the next year at least. (One day while we were practicing, my little girl dropped a bobby pin through the top and it burnt up a peice of the board!!!!)

I know I know, y'all are laughing, but it's the God's honest truth! Really though, I have played through a lot of bass amps, and it's like someone else said - what one person loves, the next one hates. I think Behrenger's are worthless. Our lead player has one and it sits in the basement. It fried the DAY he bought it. I called a friend of mine about possibly getting a Eurodesk sound board, made by Behrenger, and he told me it was all junk...but there are those here who have had a good experience with it....it's all about you! Just go out and play them all, test them all out, and see what fits the need - both sound and price...and they're out there.

Good luck!

Thats really cool. I take it you loved the sound of the kenwood then?

Oh yes!! It was the most thundrous thing, and only 500W, which it sounded like way more. And I've thought very seriously of just getting another one of those!! LOL!

I have used stereo power amps for guitar amps, works just fine.
I have a lot of Behringer stuff and it is all very hearty stuff, very reliable. I know a guy that is a tech, owns one of the top repair shops in town, he takes Berhinger stuff apart and looks at the design ( the dude is an electronics wizard) and he is quite impressed with not only it's design , but the choice of components they use.
I suppose you can get a bad one of anything, but getting bad Behringer stuff is quite rare. both of my Behringer amps have very rugged builds. The gain stages are well heat sinked and isolated.
