What do you guys reccomend as a good kit? a nice one... plenty of options.... not some crappy obvious copy deal, and not too expensive? :D

Yup, like he said, with maybe a zoom mulit FX box to spice stuff up a bit.

If you're talking about kits to build an electric guitar - you do the finish sanding & painting/dying, there are several options of varying price.

Low end - check out the Saga kits. Tele, Strat, Paul, and PRS models. Electronics are snap together. Torres Engineering has upgrade packs for the kits on some models.

Grizzly makes a kit, too, although more expensive.

And I'd guess the best kit out there comes from Carvin...

Is this what you are interested in?

go on there and pick and mix, choose the neck you want, body pups etc

means you aren't limited to what you get in the kit and the guitar truly is custom

For a first go round, I'd get a Saga. Nothing wrong with basswood. If you're like me, once a project always a project. Over a period of time I'd bet you could make a heck of a guitar out of that kit.

What tools and materials do you need that dont come in the pack (finishing stuff, cutting headstock... that kinda stuff)

But after you find it on stewmac, look around. I found a center-rule for 6 bucks in Germany (there on business) and it was something like 18 on SM. I also bought a router bit yesterday at a woodcraft shop that was $12.00, and $28.00 at SM.
