Okay, okay, I'm not a bassist. But I still think this guy's bass playing rocks out loud!

He's one of my favourite bassists, right in my top 5.
I love how in any mix, live or studio, you can hear his bass clearly so you know it's a very integral part to a song rather than just the background rhythm that is most bass playing.

Yeah, and while most bassists seem to be just playing one or two keys per verse, he'll play about seven or eight.

He's got such an easy to distinguish tone, but I can't seem to pin it down with my Jazz bass. He's in my top five also, but I have him at the top.

Try playing through a tube amp like a boggie or an Ampeg and cranking it up until it distorts a little.
This may help as well

I did something else... I just traded my Jazz Bass for a Geddy signature Jazz. What a difference!

I don't see how anyone could hate such a thoroughly and cosmically creative band.

Rush is a great band. They're too out there for some people to understand, but I love them.

Let there be no more Rush-bashing sacrilege here. Geddy, Alex and Neil are gods among men. Best show I've ever seen, hands down. (For you doubters, Geddy can still hit the notes as of summer of 2004.)

I've been seeing a lot of references lately about the Geddy Signature Jazz.
When did Geddy dump his Ric for a Jazz Bass? ...and for God's sake WHY??? :hmmm:

 ***?. Rush is the only band that's up there with Zep and the Beatles.Actually I think they might even be better.Well, atleast in the old days.Their new stuff's just not the same though. It's still better than most modern bands though.
Why do I rate them so high?
Because all three members play their instruments as good or better than anyone band ever has. They're tight. And I rate their writing up there with Zep and the Beatles too.Rush is f-ing awesome!!!!

geddy dumped the ric back in the late 70's for the jazz. then in the early to mid 80's, he dumped the jazz for a steinberger. then he dumped the steinberer for some graphite basses (zon's i think). now he's back to strictly jazz basses live.
why he did these things...i do not know. perhaps because he liked the sound of any particular bass better than another, i suppose.

The Rics have a distinctive tone but I found them to be neck heavy and akward to play.

What's the difference? Was your J-Bass an American?

Heavy I'll grant you. A neck-thru instrument, made entirely of hard-rock maple is gonna be heavy, but it's worth it. That density yeilds GREAT SUSTAIN!
... but MY 4003's neck is one of the skinniest I've ever played! It's about the same as a J near the nut, but it stays that way, all the way down to the body, while the Js I've played get wider & wider toward the body. :confuse:
As for sound... NOTHING can GROWL , like a Ric, when you really punch it, back near the bridge. :D
As far as balance (i.e. "neck-heavy")... not an issue. THAT'S WHAT THE BIG WEIRD UPPER HORN IS FOR!

Yus! I've been re-made a Rush believer! I just got the "Exit...Stage Left" album, and I must say, awesomeness!!! I don't even know which one to deem my favorite, they're all so delectable!

Yeah. So can my cat.
I could dig Rush well enough, but Geddy Lee's voice just makes my skin crawl. Nothing personal.

Yeah, my sis too. She'd rather listen to her one band (the one with different names...I think it's called 'modern rock music').

Geddy's voice is an acquired taste I think. It took me a while but now he's one of my favorite rock singers around. And I would agree, all three members are absolutely amazing at their instruments. Rush is definately an all-star band and one of my favorites.

Geddy Lee is pretty darn sweet. Who has heard vapor trails? I think he plays some nice riffs there.

acwild,
A friend told me that much of Geddy Lee's tone comes from his light use of both chorus and overdrive. He went on to say that this is common among many of the bassist that have tremendous tone like Geddy.
