when youre playing the bassline for a guitar, do you play the individual notes of the chord that the guitar is in? Ex. If the guitarist is playing in something in the key of A, would i be playing A, E, and C#/Db notes?

Depends on what the song calls for.
If you play in the key then you do the scales, that is if you do the walking type bass runs.
Bass is real easy to do overkill, so kinda watch what the bass drum is doing and go along with that. The bass drum adds the kick for the bass notes to ring through. Just give a close listen to most songs out and you'll notice that.

You can play outside of the chord too. The bass is its own entity.
