View Full Version : OUR top 100 guitar players

crowbarr
June 22nd, 2005, 04:05 AM
From that old thread it seems WE know better :p

so i've had a plan, we make our own list.

A vote thing would be too big and stupid so i've had the idea of just our 100 favourite guitarists, order means nothing, #100 is no different to #1 if you understand so if everyone posts up their deserving gutiarist i'm sure we'll have an awesome list eventually.

Please keep the number you post low so everyone gets a chance  maybe a max of 3 each.

#1-Stevie Ray Vaughan

The trouble with these lists is that they don't distinguish between 'great player' and 'great composer'. There are hundreds of world class players around who nobody's ever heard of - simply because they can't compose.

Kurt Cobain - Ha! Take that Nay-sayers!

But really - I think Steve Vai is the greatest player ever - oh and guitar based composer too.

It's not favourites it's who you think are some of the best guitarists out there so post up the guys you like ;)

The trouble with these lists is that they don't distinguish between 'great player' and 'great composer'. There are hundreds of world class players around who nobody's ever heard of - simply because they can't compose.

It's not about technical skill or anything, it's just the best guitarists around IYO

By my unscientific count, we've got Jimmy Page as #1 on our little list. And I agree.

Mine would be;
Jimmy Page
Ritchie Blackmore
Tom Morello

I think dkitt meant to say " a difference between a GUITARIST and a PERFORMER". A guitarist being a talented writer AND a competent player, while a performer just plays whats given to him- albeit very well. Regardless, the criteria that billboard used is a mystery to me.I'd say a guitarist that was proficient with and pushed the envelope of their instrument, while engaging and connecting with a sizeable fanbase consistantly over their entire body of work. That doesn't appear to be what billboard was thinking. To put Jack White SIXTY TWO spots ABOVE Randy Rhoads? And Clarence White over Randy? Stephen Stills over Neil Young? Fripp but no Belew? Where's Billy Duffy?

This has to be some kind of evil plot to take over the world.

Actually, I saw Buffalo Springfield several times back in 67-68 and Stills was considerably better than Young. They were the first band I ever saw with two lead guitarists and it was awesome what they could do together, but Stills handled the tough stuff.

I think there are probably enough people to agree w/ Jimi Hendrix, Page, Van Halen, Rhoads et all.

Here are three of my faves, who might not be on everyone's list:

Peter Frampton- Frampton Comes alive should by itself qualify Frampton
Warren Haynes- Filled the shoes of Duane Allman and Jerry Garcia- as well as fronting his own kick-*** band.
Elliott Easton- If you recognize the Cars' place in the rock pantheon, you have to give Easton his due.

I'm gonna be in 11th grade next year and I've never climbed a rope in gym before. I don't own anything but boxers ...and wearing boxers while climbing rope with gym shorts on is a BAD idea. I just told the teacher to screw off when they tried to make me... (for years in a row...that teacher hated me so bad.. :p)

Omar Rodiguez (the Mars Volta)
Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead)
Tom Lyngcoln (The Nation Blue) - Great Aussie Band

I picked these three because they are either great innovators, developed a truly unique sound, or just wrote and played great songs that I wanted to listen to over and over. I don't really classify a great guitarist as a technical genius, rather someone that is very skillful and also writes songs you want to here.
