I am a beginner and as I was reading about the method guitar tab I came across an unfamiliar sentence. It said something about
the 5th fret on the low E-string. I was just wondering where the 5th fret was and what strings went with the 5th fret?

The metal strips that go across the fingerboard are frets. When you hold the string down against the fret you are "fretting" the note. You don't actually put your finger right on the fret though... you put your fingers in the spaces between the frets. So 5th fret actually means to hold the string down in the 5th space up from the nut. The nut is the part where the strings come from the tuners and go down the neck.

You should visit my guitar anatomy section (http://www.zentao.com/guitar/anatomy/) and familiarize yourself with the parts and peieces of the machine.

Any string can be held down at the 5th fret. You get a different note depending on which string you are playing there.

Check out my TAB primer (http://www.zentao.com/guitar/tab/) if you haven't already.
