Anyone here ever had chiggers? I got 'em now..first time. Can't sleep because of the itching. Nothing seems to help for more than 15-30 minutes. Hydrocortisone doesn't do jack. Any suggestions aside from aputating my legs?

chiggers are larval mites that feed on skin cells. Once they drop off they itch about 10000000x worse than a mosquito bite. And you usually don't get just one.

Nah, they have nothing to do with hygeine. They usually live in areas with tall grass, usually in transition areas between different types of vegetation (like going from field to forest). I was out in the woods the other night collecting moths and I guess the boots and Deep woods Off didn't deter them.

Try some of those drops used for a toothache. Its a milder form of novocaine that works on contact - effectively freezeing the skin surface for a while.:)
Just be thankful your're not tramping through the Amazon. Its useless to wear shin protection, because the snakes always strike at the throat!:)

Clear nail polish works best, seals the hole that the chigger breathes through and kills the chigger. Gots lots of 'em in Oklahoma! Ask Bassman!

Chiggers are friggin worthless. I hate em. They absolutely drive me insane. We got em thick in southwest Missouri aka Misery...good luck with em. You can always peel your skin off or something.

I've been thinking about it.
I don't think nail polish kills them because everything I've read says the bites start to itch after the chiggers drop off. But the polish probably helps because it seals the bite off from air (which seems to reduce itching)
Caladryl lotion seems to work. I put it on around 10:30 and the itching is just now coming back (4:30).

I've always used Calamine, but, you've already figured that part out. That and a high temperance for itching.

Jeff: you live in southwest MO? sweet.
We get them a lot worse in SEMO than anywhere i have ever been. not near as bad as mosquitoes in louisiana or gnats in the rocky mountains, but that's porbably just because i'm used to the chiggers. just walked outside to take out the trash and i already have four itchy spots.
but it's not as bad as last summer, when (and i counted) i have a hundred and sixteen different bites on my legs. that i could twist around and mark...
with a sharpie. :D
but yeah. they're horrible when you're not used to them.
get in the tub, run yourself a bath of around 6 inches of water, and drop in a cup of clorox bleach. keep your face out of it and just rub it on your skin where they're at, let it soak in for a minute and then shower off.

I got them bad in Dallas when I was visiting relatives as a kid and played barefoot in the yard the way we were used to doing here. They seemed to favor the crotch area, and it was effing miserable.
I thought they bored into the skin and could only be killed with a kind of miticide lotion?

Anyone see the irony? Bugman is haunted by bugs?
Chiggers go under the skin, burrow, and then I think lay eggs. But irritation can occur shortly after the chiggers go under the skin. That's when the clear nail polish works best. There is a medication over the counter called 'ChiggerRid' that has the same stuff as the nail polish but has some sort of medication in it too. It is a little more flexible too so it lasts a little longer.
I saw the other day on tv about this dude went camping in Bungabunga (I don't remember the place) and as he slept in his sleeping bag some sort of fly layed eggs all over him, the larvae burrowed under the skin and started maturing. One of the natives came with some sort of oil that was applied to the spots which suffocated the larvae's airhole and they came to the surface, then they were pinched out like huge zits! Soooooooooo gross!!!!!!
Mmm, I'm hungry, gotta go eat now

Nah. Chiggers are the larval stage of harvest mites. They attach to skin pores and hair follicles, feed on skin cells, and then drop off after feeding (if they haven't been washed away.

Bot flies. Females usually lay eggs on mosquitoes then body heat from the mosquitos host hatches the egg. Larvae go in skin. Eat and wiggle around. They're rabbit and horse pests in the US.
EDIT: If the chiggers are still on you, then yeah, nail polish remover will work.

So, what you're saying is...
they "mite" or they "mite not"?

I guess I am lucky to live in New England. Other than the temperature extremes, nature isnt that cruel to us.

Well, since I'm working with some people deconstructing a house for like 8 bucks an hour *sigh* I've seen like a hundred and fifty kinds of spider in the past 4 days and found 3 crawling around in my hair. The bonfire we're burning the wood in singed my hair from about 10 feet away, which ticked me off, I love my hair... Nothing much really happened, I lost like a centimeter but only becuase I got away from it real quick.
But yeah man, in the past 4 days I've seen bugs I didn't even know existed. Gray ear-wig looking bugs that live in wood, huge beetles the size of my nose that live under bricks or something... god those spiders I pulled out of my hair are still buggin me.. Whenever I think about it my head starts to itch. They wouldn't lay eggs on my hair or something would they? That'd be wrong.

In the military, I saw guys get bitten so bad their whole legs turned into basically one big welt. Disgusting. I got them on my ankles really bad once and it itched for over a month. I learned my lesson and was a Deep Woods Off fanatic after that.
I've seen people try all the remedies. Bottom line - you're screwed.

the post above about the chiggers on the hair folicle is true. They do not bury beneath the skin. The insert a tube into a pore in your skin and they inject enzymes into your skin to liquify the cells. These enzyme are what causes the itching. It effect continues well after the chiger has fallen off.
What I've done in the past, as soon as you notice chigger bites, thake a shower and scrub the hell out of the bites to make sure you remove the bug. The only thing this can do is maybe shorten the itching by a day or two. The longer the bug is there, the more damage it can do, so the quicker you get it off....well, you see.
Once the damage is done, that's it. There's no getting rid of it..(the itching)
Do a search on the net for chigger bites.

I am EXTREMELY tasty to chiggers (like Bassman, I live in Oklahoma).
Best bet: prevention. Any kind of DEET product (Off! for example) will do; some people use Avon Skin-So-Soft (don't ask me why, but chiggers hate the smell).
Once you get em- MAN do they itch. Best thing I've found is hydrocortisone creme like you can get over the counter at walmart.
Hope that helps.

Fields with a lot of wind moving through, and brush that does not offer a lot of close-together movement routes are your best bet.
Also, I've been all around little streams just through every sort of bursh imaginable, and all I ever get are ticks... So maybe being close to water is a bad thing for them? Who knows.
I'm allergic to DEET, but it does indeed work.
Funny thing, I'm allergic to Scent-Away too.
