What does this so called system restore do?

A time travel device, binarararary speaking.
Takes you back in time to a place where your computer was happier.

Nah, it restores your settings back to a date point you have set.

Shame we cant do that in life....

I would not rate it, as taking your PC back to a restore point does not defrag your files, clean your registry, or heal from viruses.

I don't know the technical def. but it's like a backup you don't have to manually save to reload later. The computer saves at certain points and allows you to back up to that point. I did it last night and selected from the date on the calendar that I wanted and voila. You can even undo it if you don't get the desired results.

hehehe, easy? The actual process takes an hour, but all the reloading of drivers and programs you want on there takes longer. Give yerself a day at least, then next time it will be quicker, as you will know what to do.

Well, back up all your files first, all the stuff you perhaps downloaded, make sure you have all yer backup discs as well (drivers, etc...)

I am a sort of computer novice, and I found this site really useful

If you still do not understand, I would recommend you don't do it.

Once you do, its like having a new computer again!

I found my virus checker was slowing my PC down....

But I think you need to clear yer registry first, do a defrag and virus checker, clear your cookies and temp internet files...

Check for spyware!!! They slow your computer right down!!!

Then reformat if it is still slow.

I know that many gamers reformat....

Go to Google and search for Zone Alarm, AVG Antivirus, Clean Up!, PeerGuardian Lite, and Spybot.

Save a System Restore point first though. If you don't know how, go to Control Panel and look around in there until you find it. Should be under Performance and Maintenance or something. Clean Up can get rid of some stuff that you don't even know you have, which is cool, but it can also get rid of some stuff that you don't want to lose.

As a very last resort before reformatting, get Hijack This!. This site (http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html) has some downloads of other programs as well as Hijack This. CWShredder is a useful one. Then go to this forum (http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Malware_Removal_HiJackThis_Logs_Go_Here-f37.html) and post your log on the appropriate board. Read the FAQs, pinned topics, etc before posting though because there's some specific stuff they'll want. If you need anymore help, go to this site (http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/).

Keep in mind though, when you restore your system, it wont erase all your files that you have created or changed after you created the restore point. All your files will be there, but your registry is what gets moved back.

I dont know if you really know the term "reformat" because it entails completely wiping you entire computer clean and starting from scratch...i woulod never do that to fix spyware, or speed up my computer...it's more of a last resort...if you're smart enough...you can fix many things without reformating...

QFT..in the 3 plus years I have had a PC, before SP1, after SP1, SP2,...
no matter the configuration of Win XP, Sys. Restore never has worked,
so I just turn it off, and save the HDD space.

AVG is free, and has is a simple interface and program...basically, it enables your computer to work the speed its meant to.

I started using it when my other virus checkers were slowing down the startup etc....and i have noticed a big difference in speed.

I would recommended reformatting if nothing else worked.

As a last resort. ;)

Many computer techies I know reformat weekly. One surfs the net without a virus checker or firewall, and basically reformats once a fortnight when there is a virus abroad.

(DISCLAIMER: please do not try this at home unless you really know what you are doing! I aint taking responsibility for someone's $£%ed up hard drive!)

why would they reformat? unless they ONLY use the computer for surfing the web, or they have EVERY file they need backed up on an external harddrive...but i have upwords of 50 programs i use on my computer...i'd hate to install them all over again!

I guess that some computer boffins are sadists.... :D

The chaps I know are gamers. They squeeze their computers like a dry sponge, trying this way and that to make sure it runs at optimimum speed.

One does it when the overclocking mucks up the OS config....

If you are installing and wiping off software often (and they are often inperfect in a way you don't notice, but your hard drive does :) ), sometimes your computer can run like a snail. Crap builds up.

Think about it. The computer you bought last year, should be value for money...you expect a Pentium 4 to consistantly work like one!

Ditto that. Symantec is one of the most over rated, bloated and most attacked programs that exsists. I deleted and switched to another program about 2 years ago. I don't miss the problems Symantec use to cause.

Another bloater is Macafee.
