Howdy, I know it's all personal preference, but at 50 bucks a pop, I don't have the money to find out my personal preference..
what strings do you think sound best on a 2000 MIM jazz?
I've been told to look at maxima golds, and elixir... what do you think?
I really like the fat round sound the jazz is known for, maybe a little crunch, but not a whole lot.

My bass instructor recommends D'Addario. I have a MIM Jazz also. I haven't priced strings yet. Fifty bucks? Wow!!!

D'Addario .50-.105 here. They last long and sound good.
About the fifty bucks, you gotta remember that it's a lot of steel, and they are going to last like 6 times as long as guitar strings anyway.

right and i knew it was going to be 50 bucks, but I didn't want to spend 300 bucks searching for strings that I thought sounded good, i was hoping to narrow it down a bit..
thanks! I'll check out the d'Addarios, any other suggestions?

D' addario XLs are great strings, fairly inexpensive also.
I've tried the elixir strings before, they are very woolly sounding, more like flatwound strings. Never tried the Maximas, too expensive.
As far as strings the only really bad strings I've had were gibson brand that were on clearance. They were horrible!

Fender flatwound stainless steel strings. Change the pickups to Fender custom shops (100 bucks) and you will be amazed. It does require a serious neck adjustment though. With those two changes you get nice warm bottom end and you can just glide over the flatwounds.

Dude try DR. IMO they are easily the best strings on the market. for a 4 string set its only like 20-25 bucks and they are well worth it.

I really like flat wound strings. They are darker (more bass) feel great(smooth), last longer then round wounds. I play Jazz standards, Bossa Nova, Samba etc. If your into Rock you may want round wound strings. Good luck.

soimebody told me that Elixir's are very good, because they keep their tone forever.

Maybe a little longer. For some reason I wasn't all that impressed.
There are sooooo many strings out there and I have never paid 50 bucks for 'em. That's list and usually are lots less. Most i've paid I think were about 35 for the elixirs. Guess it depends where you shop. Actually Guitar Center has decent prices and have room to go down sometimes if you ask.
D'Addario XL nickel roundwounds are what I'm usin now on my Jazz. Rotosounds are another good string but are a little bright.
In general, from bright to warm: Stainless rounds, nickel rounds, ground roundwounds, flat wounds, nylon wounds.
Look on ebay for multiple set deals. Cost alot less.
And yes, look into a set of replacement pups. It will make all the difference.
