there are two main types of mics that people use: dynamic and condenser.
dynamic mics are you basic microphone. they are (generally) cheaper, and most of the time used to record things like electric guitar, bass guitar, and drums. they just have a cable running from them into your mixer/computer/whatever. one of the best bang for buck dynamic mics for guitar is the shure sm-57. this is really the "industry standard" of guitar mics, and you'll be hard pressed to find a professional studio with at least 1 sm-57. the sm-58, also made by shure, is more for vocals, but does a nice job of recording guitar as well.
condenser mics. these are some of the best, and most expensive mics in the world. for a really good mic, i can easily see paying $2000. they are used for vocals mainly (though some people still prefer a dynamic mic), and for large scale things, where picking up sound in a wide frequency range and from further away without amplification is essential, think recording drum overheads, an acoustic guitar, an orchestra, and a choir. they require power to work, and this is supplied from your mixer. google "phantom power" to see more about this.
basically what i'm saying in my ramble, is that for starting to record, go for a cheaper dynamic mic. depending on your budget, get an sm-57 if you can, or if you are looking to record vocals as well as guitar, go for the sm-58. if you don't wanna spend that much, samson mics are pretty nice for little cash.
once you get into it a bit more, you may wanna get a mixer and a condenser mic, or just my dynamic mics...it's really up to personal preference.
