ok, i'm interested in purchasign a bass. probably second hand because i'm not that fussed about looks, and i have no money too.

i was wondering what a good bass would be for playing primarily funky stuff. i wanna be able to slap the shizz outta that thing. if you get me?

i was thinking something like a yamaha, but i wanna hear it from the bass experts.
so i'm looking for something with reasonable sound, that is well suited for popping and slapping, and also isn't going to leave me broke.

cheers in advance.

Washburn T-24. Can be had for under $300. As far as slapping the "shizz" out of it, you'd really have to go play one to see if it "fits" for you. I liked the way it felt.
I prefer active electronics, so I went with the Force 4, but this bass is worth a look.

My Washburn is American made, and it's extremely sturdy and one of the best feeling basses I have ever played. The sounds is great, too. If you'd like to see it, you can click the link in my sig.

That was a very ignorant comment to make, Rogue.

Ahuh.

"Washburns are made in China" is still an idiotic comment.

I hate Chinese made stuff too, but you should get the facts down before posting. Washburn makes cheap stuff as well as good stuff, like any company.

Fender Jazz Bass: My personal pick of the name brand. However, you might not find one that is in your price range unless you do an extensive search of pawnshops. I have seen them around, but their age or past care may have given them a muddy tone, maybe it was from old strings or weak pickups. Every bass is different; playing them is the first step. If one is found with nice tone and body for a low price it will last forever, from what I have seen. And if you find another J-Bass let me know.

Dean Edge: I played one once, and loved it. The action was awesome, the neck size seemed right, and the pick-ups looked nice, but I didn’t get to plug it in to an amp. The prices at Musiciandfriend.com are low prices. You can always replace pick-ups.

I’ve played a Washburn or three in my day, and if you are looking for nice action and sound for slapping they are nice for that, in my opinion. However, my friend had a Washburn guitar and he various problems. So, be ready to learn how to fix your instrument. Price wise: they rock.

I like active J-Bass pick-ups for their note definition compared to P-Bass pick-ups. These pick-ups also respond well for low end, as long as you are using a proper slapping technique.

I have never liked any of the Rouge, Peavey, Squire, and Yamaha basses I have played.
