Yep, you'll blow more than the speaker running bass through a guitar amp unless the amp is so well built, but I'd highly recommend a bass amp.

At loud volumes, the guitar amp won't cope. Then again I play bass through a solid state and have had no problems so far. Be safe and don't turn that volume up!

Never play a bass through a guitar amp. Never.

The circuitry of the amp should handle it, but the speaker won't. Guitar cab speakers are designed for frequencies above that of speakers designed for bass, and chances are you will hyper extend the cone and huff the voice coil.

"...you will hyper extend the cone and huff the voice coil."
Ouch. Sounds painful.
I cast my vote with the others: don't try it!

Same. I did that with a five stringer and the amp actually sparked and poped. needless to say, it stopped working. :D

Poped?????
Oh, silly me, you meant popped.
I had these visions of your amp flicking holy water around and blessing everything in sight.
Wait, did you mean pooped? I'll leave that visual to our readers.

This bass fits your criteria, not to mention it is very high quality as well. Well, it's only a little bit more...

I play a Precision Bass through a '72 Traynor Class A (Tube) Head.
I have a DIY Cabinet with Drivers for Bass definately. But the thing about Class A (not solid state) guitar amps is that the transformer and other parts may not provide the headroom you desire (for loud rock/metal) and other voicing type issues may arise. It is possible to blow parts, but parts are replaceable. If one know what they are doing...anything is possible.
I like my Traynor Mark 3 because of the analogue (antique) Reverb and Tremolo. In fact I prefer it to my Traynor Bass Master Head. This being said open 'em both up and you will see an awful lot of similarity.

Hey Paul,
closer than you think. I live in Andover. I tried to send you a message but it said I couldn't. I added you to my IM list so I will look for you online. my AOL name is audienceofone mn.
I ended up buying a used Peavey Fury V, 5 string off of ebay. Got a pretty good deal.
I hope to play at church in a couple months so I will be playing through the house. To practice at home I bought a ZOOM 708 II bass effects pedal. It is pretty neat although I haven't even scratched the surface of it yet. I like that it has smart media that I can copy songs to, the line in feature, and of course the effects. I am a geek by trade so I like all the geeky things :)
I hope at some point to get a Boss GT6B when I am playing better and of course have the cash.

You might look at Polytone. I've got a MiniBrute II I use for bass or guitar sometimes. Probably wouldn't be sufficient for large, loud venues, but small ones wouldn't be a problem. The Minibrute weighs 29 pounds. Polytone is favored by a lot of jazz musicians.
