I can't be bothered to post a tab, but all of the bass work in "All Around The World" by the Chilli Peppers is pretty sweet. It's one of the few occasions in music where the lead guitar just repeats in the background and the bass really gets a chance to shine over the top.

I am one of the "few" real bass players here I guess. Anything by Iron Maiden is solid.

I'm not real knowledgable about what makes a good bass line because I've never played bass, but Fear of the Dark by Maiden has a really cool bass part in the 2nd chorus I think. Steve Harris rocks.

I like doing "Birthday" by the Beatles for a challenge or "Taxman". You never stop moving and quite challenging. Taxman for the groove (it's not as easy as you might think to get it exactly right), Birthday for finger dexterity.

I think stratkid wanted us to write out the licks like what he done did.
There is a thread under "Open Mike" on reading music.
I was wondering how y'all write down licks when you create one, e.g. during a practise session or when alone.
I scribble down the note numbers in the scale, e.g. I III VI. Well, actually, I am too lazy to use Roman numerals so I use the Arabic. I leave a space for quarter notes and put in a period for eight notes.
Texas Flood: 1 1.3 3s5 5 5 6.5.3s
The s means slide from the III to the V.
This, plus a note re the key is all I need to re-create the lick next time.
Walking The Dog: 1 b3 4.4 5.4
The b is a flat.
(Not my idea. I got from another bass player).
I find this easier and quicker than using tab paper of writing the notes on manuscriot paper.

7 Nation's Army by the White Stripes
that's not played on a bass, it's on a guitar with an octave pedal...the band is only two members, a drummer and a guitarist...ergo, no bass player

Cop of a copy of Mountain Live- The Road Goes Ever On. Listen to the seventeen minute version of Nantucket Sleigh-ride. This was recorded in about 1971 and Felix Pappalardi(sp)gives a clinic on how to play one great riff after another for seventeen minutes. Just looking at the other posts, I definitely feel like "old school"-but if you get a chance check it out. ;)

Ahem, I am also a bass player first. Then a guitar player second. If you can play an upright, then you are a true bass player.

Hmm. I think that is an extreme position. Rather akin to saying "If you play classical guitar, you are a true guitar player". There are so many different genres of music these days that a definition of "true player" would be a difficult thing on which to get any sort of consensus.
For example, an upright player is a 'true' bluegrass bass player, but not a 'true' heavy metal player.
If I had to define true bass player, I would use words like versatile, adept, and experienced. The player would have to sight-read music and be able to transcribe songs. I am not suggesting here that this is a definition of true.
I think I will start a thread to discuss this interesting topic.

Bass lines are bass lines, and normally backup to the real music , but there is one bass line that is the epitome of creativity. I am not a Roger Waters fan, but MONEY has got to be the all time most creative bass line. Clever as it is simple.

OK. Here is my favourite:
It is on the Nancy LaMott CD "Come Rain Or Come Shine". It is Track 4: "On The Atchison Topeka And The Sante Fe".
It was arranged by Rick Jensen and played by Jay Leonhart.
I tried to get hold of the sheet music for it but Rick said as it was so long ago he wouldn't have a copy of it.
I think it was played on a cello. Does that count?

Another Beatles number that has a nice bass line is 'Old Brown Shoe'. Its very fast and sounds awesome. I don't know how difficult it would be to play because i don't play bass but it sounds quite challenging.
Does anyone know the one i mean?

Nope but I will soon, going to get every Beatles album I can find :D
I've taken a liking to Bring It On Home by Led Zeppelin, just love the two different styles and both being in the same song makes it lovely :)

The hardest bass line I ever tried to play is the line to "I saw her standing there" by the Beatles. Try it sometime. I played bass in a band, and I play classical guitar, so I can play quite fast with all the fingers on my right hand. I played it using my index and insult fingers, and MAN my hand would hurt after playing that. I played it note for note right, in a different key that it is in on the album, but DAMN I always dreaded when that song came up in the set list.
I cannot for the life of me understand how McCartney plays that bass line WHILE SINGING that song, which I have seen footage of him doing.

Yeah you have to hand it to McCartney. Plus i think when the beatles played in Hamburg they did 20 minute versions of that song because they had to fill out their 12 hour sets.

MAN! I hope for the sake of his fingers they slowed it down to a blues for at least part of the song.

laid to rest is the shiz. its fun on guitar and bass.
laid to rest on bass................I dont think its note for note though.... yet all the tabs I've read said it is.....I just dunno. I can do it. but I wouldn't be heard at all if I played this with a band. I can't help but question it.

Most of the basslines from Chris Squire of Yes, he had a great punchy tone with his slightly distorted Rickenbacker....
Also a simple but effective riff Echoes Pink Floyd.
