Who is a real bass player, and what kind of instrument do you have?
Guitarists with basses or who play bass dont count, but you guys can comment or such.

Well, I play guitar too, but I gig with my bass. And I started on both at the same time, but really I was concentrating on the bass.

I love 'em.
A head and two 15" cabs are on the way though (need 'em for giggin'). I'm definitley thinking Fender, but I've got some others to try along the way also (someone reccomended Genz-Benz). Ampeg, SWR, Hartke, Peavey, etc just have failed to impress me so far.

Um, I started on bass, learned all I could from my 'teachers' that earned a hefty amount, and then went to guitar through a fluke with me wanting to learn House of the Rising Sun and got hooked on guitar. Played bass prof for a few years then played guitar with garage bands, then played bass in Church for a new praise band, then guitar again.
Over the years, bass gear:
Bruno Conqueror bass, semi hollow, two pups, burst finish, flatwound strings.
Played through Kasino Lounge 15" 25 watt bass combo cab.
Later played one of the headless basses borrowed for a band with my bro.
Then bought a Fender Walnut Elite w/gold hardware and actives, HEAVY AS A CAR!!!!!!
Played that through the Kasino until I upgraded to Peavey Mark IV and a 2x15 cab.
Swapped the Fender for a guitar that got ripped from me  They took the amp too!
Later started back at bass with praise band and bought an Aria ProII explorer type bass that was awesome! Chopped it up, took off all the major pointy things and contoured it for my liking, sanded the body and neck to bare wood and oiled it, then defretted it (the wrong way! :o ) and gave it to a friend.
Then purchased a Samick 5'er, red w/gold hardware and actives, through a Peavey TNT115, then got rid of all my bass stuff when I went guitar full time.
Then I found a Rogue that I had made fretless after fixing the wiring, did it right this time and it is sweet!
My oldest son gave me his Peavey Foundation bass.
Play them through a Minx 110 and Kustom bass amp w/2x15 cab that totally outrocks and out thunders anything I've ever played!
That's all I have at the moment as far as bass goes :hmmm:

I would LOVE a fretless bass. Played a fretless Fender Jazz once and fell in love, but you gotta be GOOD to play one, and watch so you don't go sharp or flat.
As far as the Monster Cables thing goes, no, but I use Planet Waves cables. They seem to work just fine and are also guarenteed for life.

I am a real bassist. I have a Fender Urge Stu Hamm signature series. Not the Urge II. Mine is a blue with a black pick guard, 32” scale, and active J-Bass pick-ups only. I cannot find another bass like it. It seems that only the Urge II is available now. Some of the people I know are clumsy and act like jerks when I get protective of my instrument.

I started as a drummer then went to bass about 25 years ago. I have met many a drummer that are good bass players. Think about it, the two live for each other. I have found that many guitar players that went to bass are just lead bass players. I like a good "walk" just as much as anyone else, the only time a lead bass player makes sense is in a 3 piece band. Got to have a lot of backgound or you sound thin. I'm happy with the band I'm in, just 1 guitar, a killer keyboardist, a bass player and drummer. The really cool thing is all 4 of us have good voices so we really have 8 instruments instead of just 4. Vocals make or break a band in my opinion.

My Bass player picked up a bass 4 MONTHS before joining our band but played hand-drums and various percussion in some gigging bands for 10 years before that. Once he learned the fretboard, he was really all set. His rhythm is perfect. Check out some of the live stuff in the link in my sig if you want to hear him. Anyway I agree, bassists and drummers are usually similar animals. A good bassist has to be half guitarist, half drummer IMO.

I'm a real bassist and play through a 1981 Fender MIA Jazz, 1981 4001 Rickenbacker, 2005 MusicMan Sub 5, 1967 premier issue Yamaha bb2000. All currently played through a Gallien-Krueger 1001rb mark II 750watt head, GK210rbh and GK 115rbh cabs or a Vintage early 70's Ampeg SVT 300 watt tube head and Ampeg 410 classic cab. For inline effects I use compression and a Tech 21 Sansamp programmable bass driver.

WAAAAY back when I played around with a bass growing up, then dabbled again in Korea when there was nothing else to do (most of the time) :)
Was working on learning guitar, and my church needed bass players so I switched. Now I have no idea why I was into guitar, I so much more love the sound of a bass.
Here is my bass. I also use a zoom 708II bass effects pedal.

I've played the bass for ~8 years, and I'm just now learning the guitar. I play a 5 string Ibanez Soundgear. Here I am with it at a disney party last spring:

Something about it always seemed kind of shark like to me. The cut-aways remind me of shark fins, I guess.
I actually got the name from LOTR (the books). That's what Saruman is called in the end. It looks like we have a wizard theme going.

having sold monster cables in my previous jobs and going though monster training for some reason, i can tell you that if you find a cheaper cable get it monster i just a thick cable with more shielding around the wireing. doesnt really improve sound and if it did its not noticeable

If you mean the bass, it's a Yamaha RBX765A with EMGs. It's ok I still think I prefer 4 string basses though. I like the extra space between the strings.
If you don't mean the bass, sorry.

I have a question for you. Why don't you stop looking down your nose at people who started on guitar? I don't see how you think that starting on guitar makes somebody who plays bass aswell a weaker player. I have a unique style to my playing BECAUSE of all the music I've learned on electric, but that doesn't mean I can't lock in a rythm and groove with it just as good as you can. "Purists" like you, who make the kind of comments you do are the kind of people A LOT of people avoid being friends and in bands with. I know I do.

Ranger. You lose my point. It is as such: People who play guitar, and then bass usually lack a solid feel of time. Not always, but usually. The role of a bass player and a guitar player are miles apart. Guitar players like to sit ontop of solid time, not be creating it, and they usually play from experience.
Thanks for flaming up on my personal views, and by the way,
"Purists" like you, who make the kind of comments you do are the kind of people A LOT of people avoid being friends and in bands with. I know I do"
A LOT of people cant make it in music. Did it ever occur to you it might be the same ones who reject pure bassplaying or musicianship that dont make it?
