Here are some sound files I put together a while back for what was going to be the Equipment Rap section of the website. Each one demonstrates a different effect. I thought some might find it useful.

distortion (http://www.zentao.com/guitar/equipment-rap/sounds/distortion.mp3)

Those are really cool clips, I did something like this to a music tech class last year. A lot of members will find this useful when deciding what to buy.
What pedals were you using for the demos?

This is great!!! There are always questions about effects. Especially newer players asking about what kind of sound will I get etc.. etc...
Now, one thing we can do to help them is direct them to this thread. NICE

If people come here looking to research the sound of effects, its also worth sending them over to www.bossus.com for them to check out the sound samples there.

This is a great reference thread, but I'm having trouble finding a pedal for effects I want to use. I have here three clips of songs that I'm aiming to play, and I'd like one pedal to do these things. I think there's some delay in there, with the second clip maybe having some tremelo, but I was hoping the experts here could help me. Thanks a ton guys!

The first two could be handled with just about any delay pedal. The third, however would need tremolo or possibly a univibe. Short of getting a multieffects unit, you'd have to have at least two different pedals.

I've only got the budget for one pedal so delay it is. Thanks, StoneDragon!

Ey nice demo's man.. I got just one question, what exactly is the difference between overdrive and distortion... In these demo's ofcourse I can hear it, but what is it that makes the difference...? (I know it's kind of a stupid question, but I've been wondering that for a while so..)

Overdrive (when it comes to stomp boxes) tries to mimic the sound of tubes being pushed until they start breaking up. Distortion gets into more saturation of harmonics.
So, basically, distortion is just overdrive turned up to 11.

o, so overdive is a bit more.. civil and less heavy than distortion or something:-p

Here are some clips from my Boss Amp Factory. It's one of the older modelers but not too bad, all in all, especially for the price. No extra effects, just amp and cabinet models. These are Boss's COSM models, the same ones that eventually made it into the BG-6 and BG-8.
For these demos I used my Charvel Model 6 which has two single coil pickups at the Neck and center PU, and a humbucker on the bridge. All PUs are active and the guitar has an active midrange boost/cut control which can make the singles sound a lot like humbuckers and the humbuckers sound a lot like singles. Also, there are individual switches on each pickup for all kinds of combinations. All in all, this is a very versatile guitar, even though the actives sound a little sterile when A/Bed with some really good passive PUs. All of these demos are running direct into my Fostex MR-8, using the reverb on the MR-8 (the modeler has no reverb of it's own).
Jazz Chorus models: These really show off the Charvel.

This is the 'American Combo' model - which is supposed to be a Mesa. This is a really hot/overdriven model that is really hard to clean up, although the variant (a single pushbutton) is clean. Although I don't like too much distortion (and this is very distorted) this will really sing and cut through almost anything so I'll use it from time to time anyway.
Neck Single (about as clean as I can get it without hitting the variant button): http://www.infoswift.com/mp3/demos/ac-charvel-n-s.mp3

I can do a lot more, but I'm getting tired. That's a shame because some of the best models are yet to come. I'll try and add more, but here's what I've got left for now...
British Combo Model (A vox, more or less): http://www.infoswift.com/mp3/demos/bc-charvel-b-various-guitar-adjust.mp3
More British Combo with more OD: http://www.infoswift.com/mp3/demos/bc-charvel-b-various-od-guitar-adjust.mp3
Vintage Stack Model (Marshall Stack - my favorite): http://www.infoswift.com/mp3/demos/vs-charvel-b-h-od.mp3
Rectifier Stack: http://www.infoswift.com/mp3/demos/rs-charvel-b-h-od.mp3
Modern Stack (Marshall JCM): http://www.infoswift.com/mp3/demos/ms-charvel-b-h-od.mp3
Modern Stack Variant: http://www.infoswift.com/mp3/demos/ms-charvel-b-h-od-var.mp3
Metal Stack: http://www.infoswift.com/mp3/demos/mets-charvel-various-od.mp3
Metal Stack Variant: http://www.infoswift.com/mp3/demos/mets-charvel-various-od-var.mp3
Crunch (this is just a model that Boss stuck in there, it doesn't sound like anything in particular, but it's not bad): http://www.infoswift.com/mp3/demos/crunch-charvel-various-od.mp3
There's one more that I just ran out of memory for. It's called Lead and it's somewhat contrived like Crunch. It's sort of a cross between the Metal Stack and the American Combo.
As I have time I'll try to do some more with different guitars. I have a Les Paul Custom, a Godin LGX and a Dean Jazz Standard, each of which sound pretty different. If anyone has specific requests, let me know.

What effect do you use to record the "metal" sound ??

/\ If you're talking about my posts, all of the sounds are the various settings on the Boss Amp Factory (direct into the board). The circuitry is the same as in the GT-6, GT-8 and the Roland Cube amps.
