I was down at a friends house in New Bern the other day and saw, in the corner of his room, a double-bass. (Upright bass, bull fiddle, doghouse bass, whatever). He did not want to sell it as it was his uncle's but he loaned it to me. I dragged it home in the car, had my bass teacher put on new strings and sell me a method book, and started to play!

Wow! What fun! It is a lot harder than the bass guitar. One has to stand all the time for a start. Plus the action is heavier. Oh, and of course, it is fretless.

Anyone else out there in Big Bottomland play one? :toohappy: :toohappy: :toohappy:

yes. It IS harder than the guitar. It requires much more forearm? strength to pull, and the string height, if not adjusted can be a little disconcerting. But it is a great instrument, and if you play it in a jazz band, it makes standard jazz songs much better.

i'm curious...how tall and wide are they?

With the little peg-leg thingy at the bottom pulled out it is just over six feet tall. The body is two feet at its widest and about three or four tall. I guess a foot or so thick. I was surprised that it was not louder than it is. The string length is almost 40" bridge to nut.

Think McCartney's bass on Major League Steroids.

How much are they? I'm curious because right now I'm looking into buying aan Ibanez bass and Peavey amp and later on (if I deicide to go to music school) I want to get a double bass.

I've sen them online anywhere from $3,000 to $10,000.

These babies don't come cheap.

I read somewhere that it is a lot easier to go from the double bass to the bass guitar than vice versa. I know I am struggling with it, but then I do not have a teacher right now.

I have just subscribed to "Bass Player" and "Bass Guitar" magazines (not a plug, I was desperate for information) and was amazed at just how many double bass players are out there.
