I've gotten real interested in building my own guitar lately, but I need to do my homework before I waste hundreds of dollars. I know of Project Guitar and its Forums, but what are some other good sites?

If it matters, I'm looking to do either an SG Custom style or a neck-through Explorer.

Thanks.

www.warmoth.com is a good site. it might get expensive, but there are lots of options

www.usacustomguitars.com is like warmoth, only with better design, higher quality woods and the best service. They won't do an SG or explorer for you though. i strongly reccommend you purchase your neck from USACG rather than warmoth, regardless of where you buy the body. USACG also has a useful and informative forum, which can be found at http://pub123.ezboard.com/fguitarsbyfenderfrm20. I've been messed around by warmoth on a number of occasions, so i wouldn't reccommend them to anyone, accept maybe as a hardware dealer.

Cheers

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I didn't mean sites that I can send a request to that'll build the guitar for me, I meant sites with detailed information for every step of building it myself.

SigFig, USACG is still really interesting though. Thanks.

project guitar is probably the most useful and then all the links contained on the site and its forum. there's also a thread in Tools of the Trade here.

and this book is highly recommended
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0953104907/104-9734237-1886365?v=glance&n=283155&n=507846&s=books&v=glance

as for usacg, they may have better quality wood than warmoth but their design selection is much lower.

I don't recommend trying to build your own axe from scratch, unless you've got tons of specialty tools and knowledge. These 2 sites will give you an idea about how complex just 2 of the processes are.

This guy did an amazing refinishing job from A to Z.

http://www.richbeckguitars.com/FretGuide.htm

Scroll down to where they show fretting a neck.

We're not even talking about cutting and shaping a body, or wiring up electronics!!!!

why not? If you want to build a guitar, you have to start somewhere.

Stewmac has some good free info sheets that you might find helpful. Also check out Synikal Productions (do a google search) which is run by gtrcane here on JS.
