Learning the fingerboard

I want to spend time learning/memorizing the notes on the fingerboard so I can QUICKLY locate a rootnote. I am presently just repeating the notes A B C on each string, and will begin to do the same with D E F G. That way at least Ill know how to locate notes somewhat. There must be some alternative way to accomplish this learning. Can I get someomes thoughts on this? Thankshttp://www.zentao.com/ubb/smilies/dazed.gif

I'm using a combination method: Flash cards, fret board diagrams and the guitar. The test of your knowledge can be done by touching the fretboard on random strings/positions and say aloud the note you would be playing. I suggest first concentrating from the open positions to the 11th fret since every thing above this is repetitive.
All of this isn't too difficult once you realize there are no duplicate notes on each string up to the 11th fret.

I suggest learning your octaves. You can cover a lot of fretboard ground quickly like this and saves a lot of that time that you would spend counting frets from the nut. I believe Stonedragon has a lesson devoted to this.

The device that worked best for me was physically writing out the notes on a fingerboard diagram. Learning the notes on the fingerboard involves a lot of association from string to string, like octaves, fourths and 5ths. By writing the notes out on a diagram, I was able to start seeing these associations.

Now, I'm not talking about just making a chart to hang on your wall and refer to anytime you need to know the name of a note. I'm talking about the actual doing of writing out the notes, like once a day, until you start getting the locations memorized.
