I wanna play some music with an Indian feel to it like some of the George Harrison stuff I found that if the guitar is tuned to an open Dsus2 and the strings are played at the very base the sound has an Indian feel, but I dont know how to put this into the context of a song as it losses the feel if bar chord cross the frets are used? http://www.zentao.com/ubb/confused.gif

It's been fourteen years, and I'm still trying to tackle the fundamentals of conventional western music. When I reach an acceptable understanding(20 more years, maybe?), I may take on ethnic music. I only have one lifetime though, ya' know, and most people want to hear the latest Santana song. http://www.zentao.com/ubb/frown.gif

The identifying characteristic of Indian music is the DRONE. They don't use chord progressions like we are used to in the west. Instead, they rely on the contrast between the drone and the scale (raga) and rhythm (tala) to create movement. The droning quality is what makes some people love Indian music for its hypnotic sound and other people hate it because "it don't sound like country music."

One way to mimic Indian music is to use the low strings tuned D A D as the drone and the high strings tuned G B E for playing melodic and harmonic figures against the droning low strings.

Now, instead of thinking chords, think intervals. Half-step movement between R-b2, b3-3, 5-b6, and 7-R are good for getting that eastern sound. Throw in some microtonal bends, and it will sound like you were born on the Ganges http://www.zentao.com/ubb/wink.gif

check out http://www.planet.eon.net/~raga/guide.html for a good introduction to Indian music.

I assume you're talking about ethnic Indian music and not pop Indian music. My ex-roommate (he moved out yesterday) is Indian and he doesn't even know what a Sitar is. He has posters with the Indian equivalent of the Backstreet Boys and he listens to those bands loud and proud.

Anyway... I believe Indian music is made up of 24 notes instead of 12 or something like that, which would probably be why microtones give music a more Indian flare as Stone mentioned.

That's all I have to say about that. My only experience with Indian culture has been an extremely negative one, and you know what they say about first impressions.

Wo, there Mr. McLoughlan... you've come to the conclusion that I am a muppet because I merely humbled myself by admitting my ignorance of Indian music to you? I guess that I should have just kept my mouth shut instead of stain your thread with my insignificant .02 cents.

My point, and this goes for me only, is that there are plenty of western musical styles that I would like to be versed in BEFORE I tackle ethnic music. [the rest of message removed by MrSamson]

Mrsamson-->I don't know how that got past the language filter system...but lets please keep things clean in here.

Again, lets not personally attack one another in here. Rather, respectfully exchange information with one another taking advantage of this opportunity.

I can understand your frustration after being attacked, but there are other ways to respond. Perhaps you could even let Stone or myself know in the future. http://www.zentao.com/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

Thanks!!
