Hi guys, Im pretty new to guitar and am interested in modes at this point. I get all my direction from the internet and want to have some skills before I seek instruction from a teacher. There is a ton of info out here. My delema is that I cant seem to understand modes. My focus is on the major scale. I want to learn all seven modes. I have read several websites offerings on the topic, but alias, I must be stupid, I cant seem to get it. Can anyone shoot me a link to a good explaination of the modes and how to play them. Thanks much.

Click the link below with the title Iside The Music. Go to the section on Music Theory, then click on Modes. Stone has a way of presenting material in an easy to understand way.

Thanks, MrSamson! I should have done that instead, duh! I just checked out your page for the first time, and I've got to say, pretty cool. Please get to the Theory section, so I can read your takes! We should exchange Napster names.

geoffreyt,

Why don't you ask some specific questions about modes and we will all throw in our input?

No problem ghodaddyyo....

Thanks for the compliment on the practice pages...I have drawn out on paper what I want to do next...

1) my list of tabulature books with scans of the covers...maybe my take on each of them...I dont know...more importantly how I went about getting them...used on Ebay...

2) I want to finish the "Learning Songs in the 21st Century"...there are some specific things that I do that are no secret and make it VERY easy to learn songs...with mp3s and software that is out there...

probably after that...stone wants me to put up my practice routine...specifically how I approach practice...

Really those pages are aimed at the beginner...seriously..I believe that people can learn via the internet...but there are not many sights (any) that give ideas as specifically what to do...for a beginner...that is huge.

I know that I have put "guitar practice" into several search engines when I first started just 2 years ago LOOKING for EXACTLY what my pages have...

soooo...the long winded response to you comment on my take on the theory pages...well...that is currently where I am at right now...and even some of the later lessons...that stuff really takes a long time to digest...

BUT...I do hit the modes HARD in my daily practice routine...really hard...modes in my opinion seem to seperate the men from the boyz...when used correctly...that is why I was excited about that catz post...

Oh..before I forget...I am not on Napster all that often...on and off...I want a song...Stone wants a song..I log on...grab it..and log off..

I am ALWAYS on IRC (Internet Relay Chat--I think that is what it stands for)...if you want to hook up some time on there...we can exchange filez all day long....

Later...

i'm interested in reading your practice routine when you get to that. i've tried many, and still haven't found what works for me. i'm sure when i finally find what works it'll be pretty off-the-wall. i've tried strict routines that work well for a few days but i get so bored that i don't stick to them. i need to find a way to learn the fundamentals without boring me to death.

lately the time i've spent on guitar is modifying lyrics to songs to fit what's going on in my life now and doing lead work in between phrases that fits with the lyrics. stuff like that has it's benifits, but i really need to force (i hate that word) myself to learn more of the basics.

i'm envious of your ability to stick to a good practice routine. practicing sounded so much easier before i picked up the guitar http://www.zentao.com/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

guys, THANKS for the input. I have just spent a couple of moments at the suggested link and see it is insightful to me. I will spend some more time ( as I am at work now ) with it. Great, some midi progressions to use too! Thanks again. Zee ya zoon!

MrSamson, you'll have to show me how to use IRC and how to get it. It sounds interesting though, and I have tons of MP3's to share. I really got into MP3's to collect songs I grew up with in the 80's, but my collection spans several genre's, from the 60's rock and roll, to 90's techno.

sounds like stuff I would like to trade...

I was going to ask you...did the link to my mp3 list page work?

Stone and I have been having conflicting results when accessing that page...

Anyway...here is a link to a newbie page from a group that runs a help channel on IRC...I want my IRC!!!!!!!! (http://helpdesk.zaz.net/index.html)

A note on IRC...
1) one of the most addictive things related to computers
2) A no-mans land...anything and everything under the sun is attainable in IRC...ANYTHING
3) very smart, techy computer folks hang on IRC...this is both good and bad

anyway...it is awesome...Let me know if you have any questions when you are getting the ball rolling on IRC...perhaps we could hook up there and chat sometime...start and INSIDE THE MUSIC channel...that would be kinda cool...

I am planning on putting together a contact page within the practice pages that has info on emailing me or better yet where I hang on IRC...once you get IRC all dialed in...I will let you know where I hang on DALnet and what my nickname is...

by the way...what are you running for connection speed?
I am running DSL with 750 download and 250 upload...

Currently I am not seeking anything to download...the reason being my HD's are FULL...I have been downloading movies lately ever since that DVD cracker went public...so my HD is full of movies as well...which happens quickly...

anyway..all of this will change soon when I get a CD burner...but I am always curious as to what others got...

At work we are running through T1 lines but we are blocked by a firewall. This doesn't allow me to run programs like ScourNet, Napster, or FTP, so I doubt it'll enable me to use IRC. I will attempt this at home, but I only have a Pentium 166 with a 56K modem to work with. I have a CD burner(HP8101), which is definitely worth the price you pay.

Your link to your MP3 list does work. Maybe you could give us a clue as to what movies you've got.http://www.zentao.com/ubb/smilies/wink.gif I couldn't download movies yet, it would take too long, but I'm working on getting an up-to-date computer so I can start using studio mixing software.

Josh...

No I have not...I think my channel just got Mission Impossible 2 last night...

The most recent movie I have is Gladiator.asf

Lets not discuss that in here though...I have an Fserver on IRC...and the channel I serve in has quite a bit of movies...#movies&mp3z...on DALnet...

My nick is Mr_Samson...(surprise?)

See ya there maybe!!!!
