View Full Version : Caffeine- The Acceptable Addiction

Mr. Boston
January 4th, 2006, 12:22 AM
Are you addicted to it? I am. I drink more than a quart of coffee a day. I drink a lot of water too, to balance it out, but the first few hours of work every day I'm chugging that stuff. For the purposes of the poll let's say a "cup" is one standard serving. What's that like 10oz?

Yeah. If I'm feeling dull, maybe I'll have another in the afternoon, something fancy like a mocha, but that's uncommon.

3-4 cups of very strong coffee. Like..if there is 2-3mm of coffee covering
the bottom of the cup...you still can't see the bottom of the cup.

2-3 Monster Energy's...or Bawls...

Capucinno...1 or 2.

I cannot operate unless I am connected intraveniously to the coffee pot...

Saying that, I went for many years without drinking caffeine drinks. I dunno what happened since.

I do drink a couple of litres of water a day, too.

D'ya know that a side effect of caffeine is tinnitus? (prob. linked with high blood pressure...) If you stop drinking it, sufferers of tinnitus will find a drastic drop in symptoms.

I have cut down to about 3-6 now, after I nearly passed out from an OD a few months ago, I used to drink about 12 cups a day of filter stuff fresh from the beans, each cup has roughly 100-180 mg of caffine in. So thats over a gram of caffine a day, one day I had about 20 cups in a day and I felt so ill, it was awfull my heart was going so fast, so at the most now I have 6 cups, but most days just about 3. I want to stop completely cause a caffine OD is very scary, it feels like iminent death, and you can die from to much.

I drink diet coke, but that's not caffeinated.

Diet coke has 47 mg of caffine in it.

As a Brit, of course, my caffeine intake is largely via tea. :rolleye:
Apparently a cup of tea has around 30mg caffeine, but this varies widely depending on how long you let it brew. Can be as little as 20, up to over 100. I drink mine medium, I guess - and I only have 2 cups a day.
I rarely drink coffee (with caffeine) - maybe 3 or 4 cups a week at most. Otherwise, decaf.

Coffee actually has very little noticeable effect on me, even espresso. The serious Greek/Turkish stuff does have a real zing, but only for a few minutes.

As for addiction, when I used to drink more tea than I do now, I did notice that I seemed to get headaches if i went without any tea at all for a day or so.

I have a chemical dependence on coffee. There, I said it.

If I don't have a ~20 oz by noon, my neck and head tighten up and I get an inconsolable, killer headache.

All day and all night.

Here's an interesting factoid: The coffee at "premium" coffee shops like Starbucks and Peet's actually has much less caffeine in it than cheap supermarket brands (Maxwell Mulch, Folgers, etc.) and the swill that is served at Dunkin' Donuts and other typical coffee shops.

Depends on how tired/hungover I am at work...we have a bakery next door that make really good coffee, and the girls that work there don't make me pay for it...so I said 1-3 but I probably on drink about 3 a week...

Although I do get into the Vodka and Redbull when I'm out at nightclubs...that's usually about 10 in a night...

January 4th, 2006, 07:10 AM
I have one large cup of 1/3 regular and 2/3 decaf in the morning to wake me up (on the carafe it says three cups so I guess that's one cup of regular.) Then I have 3-4 cups up decaf as the day progresses.

I've gone through high stress periods in my life when I get into drinking way too much caffine and I always end up paying the price. Insomnia at night, can't stay awake during the day without more caffine. The lack of sleep at night causes me lower back pain, neck aches, and head aches. I now try to avoid these binges at all costs.

I vary rarely drink soda, occasionally Sprite which i believe is Caffeine free. I had a cup of coffee this morning, but thats only because i was at my parents house, on averge otherwise i'd say i drink about 1-2 cups of coffee a Month, sometimes none at all.

Occasionally i'll have a red bull/etc before a night of partying to get things rowdy, other than that i don't want to be addicted to such a drug. I'd hate to NEED to drink/do something to feel awake every morning.

You guys should try orange mango juice or something, usually does the trick for me lol :P

My day does not start until I have coffee.

Mr. Boston
January 4th, 2006, 07:53 AM
For me- with coffee anyway I like the aroma as much as the taste. It's the whole ritual of it. Especially this time of year- it warms up my hands, makes my cubical smell nice and homey. I dig it. Plus no one in my office ever objects to someone taking 10 minutes to go out and grab a cup of coffee. I've done more "networking" at the coffee shop than I could ever do in the office. In Boston your coffee preference means as much as anything else. If you like the same coffee as your boss- you're gonna go far.

I don't care much for coffee, hot tea is much better imo. I was addicted to caffeine once though because I worked at a restaurant and would drink Dr.Pepper the entire time I was there. After a while I noticed that on days I didn't work I would get this gnawing headache, or if I would be too busy while I was there to make a drink. I let this go on for about a week and then just stopped drinking all caffeine cold turkey. I drank nothing but water and decaffinated tea for about a month, and now I drink caffeine occasionally, but never on a regular basis.

You know that it's estimated that if you could drink 100 cups of regular coffee in one hour, the blood pressure'd be enough to blow the top of your skull off :D? That's why I stick to 6 per day, maximum. Cheap black sludge only, of course :).

I drink two to three cups a morning and if I am in need of a nice slow down I will drink it in the evening about 7 or 8 before I head off to bed at ten, I dont know why but this really relaxes me and helps me to sleep a little better. So at most I drink 4 cups a day, on days I go to church it jumps to about six or seven cups

Tea is disgusting.Outrageous! As a confirmed tea drinker (sip, sip) that kind of comment makes me raging mad! In fact (sip, sip) it's a not inconsiderably irritating opinion. More to the point (sip, slurp) it's, well, a somewhat disagreeable statement to make. Trouble is, tea makes you feel so mellow (slurp, slurp) that, although I, um, disagree, I think, er.... hmm, anyone fancy a biscuit?

See this is why Britons can never kick up a fuss about owning guns, or any of that macho nonsense. We'd far rather have a nice cup of tea. The opiate of the UK masses.
(Hey, Boy George even said he preferred it to sex. Don't think I'd quite go that far....although if you're talking about sex with Boy George... )

Usually I drink coffee, Dr. Pepper and coke. Mostly coffee though. Drink it everyday except for Sunday (because I cba to put the coffee pot on during sunday).

I also drink a lot of water as well, not to balance it out (just when I'm bored). Coffee is 99% water anyway (unless you add cream, but that's ghey).

I drink 2-3 large Dunkin Donuts coffees a day. Caffeine doesn't seem to affect me for very long. I've had a large cup of coffee and gone right to sleep at times. After I finish a cup I give it about an hour or so, then I'm back to being run down. My blood pressure has risen in the past two years. My doctor says it's on the high side of normal.

Other than that all I drink is water, though there is the occasional 1-5 beers a month or so.

About a year ago I quit caffeine. I actually had detox for a couple of days lol. My head ached and my stomach hurt, and I was very irritable. I was really shocked because the symptoms weren't much different from when I quit nicotene.

I don't function well before my first coffee. I drink the first one before I'm out the door and drink a large Stanley flask throughout the day, after dinner in the fall/winter its more coffee and in the spring /summer after dinner it's tea, both hot tea (a by-product of being born and living in England). and sweet tea (a by-product of living in Texas.) For the folks who don't live in the US. sweet tea is iced tea with more sugar than you really need.

Mr. Boston its soooo right about the ritual of it , it really does get me out of bed when the aroma wafts up the stairs to bekon me into the land of the living.

i drink mine mostly in the form of tea and coke, although i will have a strong mocha instead of a cup of tea,if its availeble.its very strange,i dont notice any energy surge after a coffee etc. or "withdrawal" symptoms if i dont drink any but i will have a voice in the back of my mind saying "you know you want to :D".one thing i will say though, diet drinks are infinitely worst than the normal variety.they are pumped full of sugar alternatives which are nearly always worse, and more acidic (bad for teeth, digestion) and often carcinogenic.anything boasting less fat is pumped full of sugar!.anything which boasts less sugar,is pumped full of chemicals!your better off sticking to the standard or just avoiding it all together.and taurine, ginseng, all those caffeine replacements still cause addiction and withdrawal-my 2 cents :)

I have to have one in the morning. Sometimes I drink more and sometimes less. Right know I am drinking almost two pots a day. I would love to quit.

I started when I was 16. My parents sent me to one of those death camps people were sending their kids to in the 80s. They marched us through the forest with heavy gear starving us half to death. One of the best parts of the day was morning coffee. One of us would walk down to the lake, dunk the pail and we would boil the water. We could not carry instant because of the damp conditions so we had a bag of regular grounds. Each of us would take a tablespoon in our cup and pour the boiling lake water in. After I was done with the liquid I would eat the grounds (I was starving) Best coffee I ever had!

I reread my post and I reminded myself of Dr Evil, the scene he is in the support group talking about his childhood:D

It was a summer thing in Minnesota near the Canadian border for "troubled youth" It was not literally a death camp I just said that because kids were dying on them. I didnt paticularly enjoy it then being hungry, wet and cold all the time but I would love to do it again, this time I would take more food and bring good coffee with a camp perculator.

I'm also pretty much always jacked up on adrenaline from my running.

I drink 2-3 coffees a day, either espresso or flat-white made with an espresso maker. I have one first thing in the morning, one after lunch, and maybe one at about 3pm. I try to avoid any caffeinated drinks after 5pm, as I have trouble sleeping otherwise.
If I started drinking more than 4 cups a day, I think it wouldn't be healthy. I would get a dependency. I drink coffee because I love the taste - especially now that I use the quality ground varieties. The morning coffee is not something I need to wake up, it's just a (pleasant) habit. I could cut out coffee without too much trouble.
