Today I was trying to find a way to modulate smoothly (by every fifth interval) from key to key while still playing on the same fret.
For example, if I was playing the Cmaj pattern on the 12th fret..how would I modulate to G, then to D, then to A, etc. while still playing on the 12th fret? I found out that you can change keys by playing the same pattern 5 frets down (or 7 frets up...same thing) (Cmaj pattern at 12th fret = same pattern at 7th fret but in Gmaj scale)..but then the tone may sound a bit different.
Instead, what one can do is take the pattern 5 frets up from the original pattern and play that at the same fret. You can find the ppatterns at www.wholenote.com's (http://www.wholenote.com's) scale ggenerator.
So lets say I want to start in the key of c and modulate a bit. One can do this: (patterns based on key of C)
C - [12th fret pattern - playing at 12th fret]
G - [5th fret pattern - playing at 12th]
D - [10th fret pattern - playing at 12th]
A - [(15-12notes/frets=) 3rd fret pattern - playing at 12th]
E - [(20-12notes=) 8th fret pattern - playing at 12th]
Unfortunately after that...I think I have to change frets...maybe one fret over or so.
I obviously didn't explain this idea very well but if you know your patterns, I think it would be pretty good for soloing (when using pentatonics for example).
anyway its just an idea that I thought of today.
