I really like tapping (cuz i'm somewhat decent/good at it), except i can never figure out which notes to play over when i make up my own stuff. is there some theory or rule that simplifies this? i know it's kind of a weird question, but i guess it's kinda similar to soloing over a chord progression (which i can't figure out either...not that i can solo).
Anyone have any advice?

Tapping a solo is no different than playing it with a pick. It all comes back to the scales. First suggestion is to learn the Major scale patterns all over the neck, then you can use whatever technique you want to play the notes.

yeah. except i can't get it to sound all that good (even if it is all on the scale).

If you can do hammer-ons and pull-offs, then you can do tapping. It's exactly the same thing... you're just using your right hand for a note or two. If you are trying to go at break-neck speed before you have the notes clean and smooth then it is going to suck.

Stone:
I can tap. That's not the problem. The problem is figuring out which notes to tap over. Sometimes it sounds pretty cool, but other times it doesn't. I often find it sound like Kirk's solo for "One," which is the song i learned how to tap from (i can't play any other part of the solo http://www.zentao.com/ubb/smilies/tongue.gif).
If anyone has input, let me know.

Ok... then it comes down to note choice.
Arpeggios and minor pentatonic scales are a good place to start. They have a nice "open" sound to them.
If you're in A... and the chords are Amin G F Amin... try playing something like this:
Over Amin
-------------------------------------------
--10---13---15----------------------------
-------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------
Over G, switch to this:
-------------------------------------------
--8---12---15-----------------------------
-------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------
for F try this:
-------------------------------------------
--10---13---18----------------------------
-------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------
Then Finish up with something like this when it comes back to the Amin:
-------------------------------------------
--17--13--10--8--10--8--5--8-------------
-------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------
If it's not obvious.... use all hammer-ons and tap the highest note. Play each line over and over in rapid succsession for the duration of the chord.
For the last line... tap the highest note and then use pulls and hammers for the rest of the notes. When you land on the last note, bend it up a whole-step, stick out your tongue and wag your head like a dog and throw your guitar around behind your back so you'll be ready to sing the big chorus.
