Is it true that most lead guitarist use mainly the minor pentatonic scale? I know in country they switch between minor and relative minor. My ex-guitar teacher said i don't need to learn others like major because they are rarely used.

Major and minor pentonic scales are the same, just different roots. ex. A minor = C major, etc. Just learn all the patterns and know what notes you're playing.

I hate to dog another teacher, but...
I guess it all depends on what kind of player you want to be. If you only want to play a few certain things, you can limit your learning to just those things. But if your goal is to become a well-rounded musician, you need to learn them all!

I would say that you will certainly have your foot in the door with just the minor pentatonic scale as far as rock stuff is concerned. But my personal opinion is that anybody who advocates ignorance and/or limitation needs to be slapped silly... or better yet... locked into a padded room and forced to listen to '70s dico music while watching reruns of Leave it to Beaver nonstop for about a week. That would cure them.
