I'm a relative beginner to jazz myself. It has been difficult, frustrating, and rewarding at the same time.
The best thing to help you out, is to listen to as much jazz as you can. I tend to listen to the older masters such as Django Rheinhardt, Charlie Christian, and Wes Montgomery, so that I can develop an understanding of the roots. Listen as long as it takes for you to get the "feel" or the "swing" down.
Build a vocabulary of 7th chords. I have a book called "The Complete Guitarist" which gives the chord progressions to many styles including jazz. You will hear a lot of people talking about the "ii V I" chord progression, but by the time you get through turnarounds, and chord inversions, it will make very little sense.
Master the major and minor scales, as well as dorian. Heck! Learn as many scales and modes as you can. Learn arpeggios.
If you are coming from a classical background, you may be interested in Chord Melodies. Check out the book "Jazz Guitar Chord Melodies" by Dan Towey. It comes with a CD and is played solo. Very Beautiful.
Hope this helps a little, cause Jazz is a lifelong pursuit. That's why the best players are sooo old!

It's funny how on one hand, jazz is considered a very intellectual art form. You've really got to know your chords, scales and theory. But on the other hand, it's all feel. And the only way to learn it is by doing a lot of listening and playing.
I ran into a good site a while back that had tons of jazz chord progressions.... but now I can't find the link. If I come across it again, I'll post it for you.
