View Full Version : Halo 2 vs. Halo 1

Almost every day my friend Jake (ERB) comes over and we play Halo 2 1-on-1. Lately we've been playing Halo 1 instead... while the graphics are near terrible, the gameplay is actually a little better I think. You throw grenades farther, crouching isn't as laggy when you're running, and I think the weapons are more balanced. Whats your game of choice- Classic or new school? I'm torn between the two but right now I'd have to say the original.

hmm........new school. Halo2 just has more weapons, levels, vehicles, and you can play as the elites.

halo the original by far. i remember have huge lan parties and getting the shotgun and having a blast with the pistol and shotgun. best map ever was damnation man i love that level. halo 2 all became about live and the pistol wasnt as cool. i miss the old memories of the original halo so much :(
i think i just voted for the wrong one because i was having a nap and jst woke up oh well.

Yeah i'm going with halo 2. Me n some buddies have LAN parties like every month or so and halo 2 just ups it so much...bigger levels, dual wielding rocks (for the most part) i like some of the older maps from halo 1 more though, before they were improvised and stuff on halo 2. some weapons are gay in it though, like the covenant carbine *ugh*

Dual Wielding unbalances everything. Sure you can't throw grenades but still. Close quarters I can kill you before you can get off a shot- Plasma Pistol and Magnum-nuff said. All you need to do is keep it charged... and once you turn the corner unload the plasma pistol and time it so just as it hits you pop one in the head. Can you say 25 to 7? (my favor... XD)
Also the covenant carbine kicks ***- I really don't like how they kind of split the assault rifle into two different guns. The covenant carbine is kind of how the battle rifle SHOULD'VE been- that 3 shot BS is uncool. It kills your hit ratio.
In Halo 1 the pistol was insane crazy strong but still- everything seems more balanced. Besides in Halo 2 its like MC just can't throw.
And the elite model sucks anyway- It's just easier for people to pick a headshot on you. Since your head is ducked down into your chest, just aim for the torso and you get it.

The only good part of that song is the catchy chorus line- other than that I really dislike that song.

Halo 2 is better, it's just more plain fun. Halo 1 is harder and takes more skill but when has that ever been the point of a game? That pistol is absolutely rediculous.

I agree- it's really hard to counter the pistol. It's great for short-medium and for long range its still pretty accurate and will knock a sniper out of zoom real easy.
Just get behind a corner and start whippin' them frags. If you get up close and crouch up and down they'll lose you, then run behind them and melee. I've got it all worked out... :D

I never understood what was so good about either. The single player aspect of it sucks. Multiplayer sucks (you can't exactly evade shots, everyone is slow and you don't jump very high). Whenever I played it (I played it often, unfortunately all my friends love(d) it), it was basically whoever gets the first shot in wins. I remember the guns being cool.
As far as FPS games... the computer is definitely greater than console. Mouse + keyboard is soooo much better. UT (and all of it's sequels or whatever, 2003,2004?) > Halo 1 and 2.

I think Halo 2 takes it. Although I deeply, deeply miss the original pistol, and the wonderful death matches on Hang 'em High (BEST LEVEL), I think the graphics, weapons, awesome levels, and dual weilding make Halo 2 the winner. We have CRAZY parties in my apartment, where, at many points, we're all just standing and yelling at the screen at the top of our lungs (No joke), while the building manager stands at the door and flips out. :D

We just got Halo and Halo 2 working on my mates 360 last night, even live still works with Halo2. He has 43 inch Plasma TV, So I pretty much never leave his house, and the bonus is he lives in the Flat upstairs from me. Anyway, Halo and Halo2 look damn fine on his tv its in a higher resoloution than a standard TV, we started Halo 2 co-op on Ledgendery last night and did'nt make it through the first level, lol, so we put it down to Heroic. Both are great games I think I like them as much as each other. On Halo, the Flood levels on Ledgenary Co-op with my brother years ago are some of my fondest gaming memories.

Me and Erb can get past the first level :D- but it's HARD! Definitely a challenge. Works best if you have 1 guy on Plasma pistol charging at the elites and 1 guy with a battle rifle going for the head but they still kill you in like 5 shots.
Honestly I think the 2 player levels in halo are better but the Campaign was pitiful- I don't care about the damn elites. I want to protect earth from alien invasion, not waddle around as some goofy looking elite with a beak and creepy long fingers.
I really do like how in Halo 2 they polished up some of the original Halo maps and just kept 'em. It was awesome to see a familiar level but with like a few new twists and turns in it. Halo 1 is best for 1 on 1 with small maps IMO.
I also think its sucks how they took out a ton of options with custom games. Before you could have 400% shields, damage resist, infinite grenade, etc etc. More carnage! Now you don't have half as much stuff to play with.

I just loved the whole storyline of Halo, I read all the books to, which gave a good bit of background on the spartans and the War with the Covanant. It has the whole Battle at the fall of Reach in the book's, amazing action and suprisingly well written. I highly recomened them if you like the story from Halo, they were written with input from Bungie to.

Halo 2. btw what is everyone's gamertag on xbox live, mine is Banana Attack. Add me and I'll own you in some 1 on 1.
I like Halo 2 more because there's more weapons, and they kept a bunch of the old ones too. The SMG is basically the same as the old assault rifle, the new pistol is just toned down in power and has no scope, and you can't throw grenades as far.
Best strategy (works good in 1 on 2 or 1 on 3): toss 2 frags around the corner to where the other 2 or 3 people are, as soon as the second grenade leaves your hand, charge around the corner and open fire with the BR. One person will probably be already dead from the grenades and all you have to do is take 2 or 3 shots to mop up the rest of them. Reload, restock, repeat.
ShiggityShwa
January 27th, 2006, 01:30 PM
Also if you're not a ***** on Halo 2 turn shields off, make it so no weapons on map, everyone starts with BR and pistol, and start with frag grenades. Play on small level such as Lockout or Ascenscion with 50 kills to win or 100 if there is teams. Voila, you have chaos in a can

I liked Halo alot more than Halo 2. Everyone who really has an oppinion on this question I think will agree with me that Halo (before Halo 2 came out) was awesome. The problem is that they changed alot of stuff that really did not need changing. They changed they way that cheif moved. In Halo 2, he runs ALOT slower, and jumps almost twice as high, and crouching just got wonky sometimes. Why did they change that?
You don't take damage from falling in Halo 2. How fake is that? Why? This was a nice subtlety in Halo: did you know that in Halo if you took a fall that was high enough to hurt you, and you crouched at the exact right time when you hit the ground, you would eaither A) take less damage, or B) take no damage at all? That was something that not many people knew about, and could get you the win in alot of games. Why did they get rid of this beautiful little bit of realism?
Also, they changed the melee attck completely. In Halo, the melee attack went where you told it to go. If you were going to miss, then you missed, and if you were going to hit, then you hit. In Halo 2, the melee attack TRACKS the enemies! You don't always know where you are going to end up when you use it.
They changed the feel of the physics in Halo 2. Things were heavy in Halo, esspecially the vehicles. When driving the warthog in Halo, I remember thinking the thing was big. In Halo2, eventhough the thing looks like it is proportionally the same size, it feels like you're driving a toy truck around. The same goes for just about all the vehicles (and ties in to what I said about how cheif moves).
Things don't sound as cool in Halo 2. Isn't the sound of the SMG just grating? It sounds like some kind of crackling sparkler. The assault rifle was alot more fun to use (even though it works almost identically) because it just SOUNDED cooler. It had some oomph. The same goes for the wartharg. I said it drives like a toy truck in halo2, well it sounds like one as well.
Then there is the whole balance issue people have already talked about. And I'm surprised to hear that so many of you think that Halo 2 has better graphics. I think they went way overboard on the whole bump-mapping idea. Objects don't blend in with the areas since the objects are all bump-mapped and plasticy looking, while the areas are not. Plus, the animations of the enemies were far more convincing, and real in Halo.
Now, I've gone on about this for a bit, but I think I must clarify. This probably makes it sound like I hate Halo2 and love Halo. I do not hate Halo2 ...Halo2 is awesome, and I enjoy it very much. It's just that Halo was so close to perfection, and they changed so many things in it needlessly. There is not one thing that didn't get modified in some way. It was just very dissapointing for me.
...I think it would have turned out alot better if that stupid guy didn't get a tatoo saying that the game was going to come out nov 9. They could have spent more time with it and finished it up. I would have rather waited for a game that was truly better than Halo.

aye everybody is talking about how cool the pistol was...they toned it down on the new pistol so you couldn't snipe with it, that was like the main thing. I mean really.....the pistol was like better than most of the guns in halo 1, that just doesnt make much sense when you have a sniper rifle but the pistol can basically do the same thing

If your mad about the old pistol not having a scope just pick up a carbine, same damage and I think the same ammo in a clip. And also the SMG is less powerful than the old assault rifle, but dual wielding more than makes up for this.

Halo 1.
Why? Here's why, in a nice and well-explained list that has been consistantly posted on the Halo message board on GameFAQs.com:
1.) The pistol. I cannot tell you how many times that little gun has saved my life. Overpowered? Yes. A scope? Yes. However, its just so fun to play with. Like you could be playing MP with a newb and run up to them with the pistol. They'll probably say "***? A pistol?!"
BAM BAM BAM. That's three headshots and they're down for the count.
2.) The characters. Alright, frankly, Halo 2 had better graphics than Halo if you compared them side-by-side. However, compare them to their time. Uh-hunh.
Anyways, that not what I'm getting at. In Halo, I felt connected to almost every character. Especially Cortana. And not just because she was a naked hologram. Cortana was actually helpful and gave me markers of where to go fast. Not once in Halo 2 did I get one. And I couldn't bear the silence of where Cortana wasn't talking.
3.) The levels. Halo 2 had a really dark feel to it. In fact, even the most well-lit levels seemed dark.
None of them actually calmed me like the level "Halo" in Halo. That was downright fun and peaceful. Even at the giant battles to save the Marines, I felt at complete ease killing those Elites and even more so the Grunts. Not so much the Jackals. They were never fun to kill.
And then the Library. Dear God alive I remember that. It was last year, a few days after Christmas. I was playing it on my Commodore 64 monitor right before we had an open house. I had to take about three breaks or else I would have gone into a cardiac arrest.
And that was on Easy.
Getting through The Library on Legendary is seen as a badge of pride and skill for any Halo player. There's no such challenge on Halo 2, and its Library copy, which I forgot the name of but its the third level as the Arbiter, fails completely. I lost patience with it. I would be sitting on that damn elevator fighting off the Sentinals asnd the Flood Combat forms, and got so bored I jumped off, turned off my 360, and went to do something worthwhile. Of course, this was after I had already beaten the game.
Story: Halo 1>Halo 2. And this is just because there are no plotholes that you can drive a Warthog through.
Enemies: Halo 2 had more, but they all seemed... less. I dunno, but they didn't give me the feel that they WILL smash your head open if they get half a chance. Seriously, I was almost afraid of the Flood in Halo, but in Halo 2, I was yawning. Seriously. And don't even get me started on those damn bosses. Mysterious shield? Yes. Can't harmt hem at certain times? Yes. Endless minions? Yes. A bore? Oh yes baby.
The MP: Halo 2 had more levels. Halo 1 had better ones. Halo 1 had XBC. Halo 2 had XBL.
The fans: Allow me to suggest that you visit their respective message boards on GameFAQs.com. both are on the XBOX list, and in the top Ten Boards. Now which one if full of clan recruitment and general assholery? Uh-hunh. And which one actually has discussions of the story, tales of what happened to you in it, and discussions about the books?
I rest my case.
Overall, Halo 1>Halo 2. Lets hope Halo 3 kicks it up.

Halo 2 ruined everything with online lol. I know that seems contradicting cause adding online mode should make it better BUT. Everyone in my grade used to have massive halo parties at this rich kids house and they were the most fun ever...plus it was an interesting way for all the guys in our grade to bond. Once Halo 2 came out they stopped doing that since it could be done online.

We still have Halo (2) LAN parties every week or 2, except we have it in one kid's small crappy basement with a bunch of tiny TVs :). Most of us don't have broadband internet at home so we still have an excuse to get together and do it. I have to say Halo 2 just because multiplayer seems more fun to me. I can't comment on single player for either game because I don't own either one (or an Xbox for that matter).
Edit: I have to say though, after spending some time playing multiplayer on Resistance: Fall of Man for the PS3, it owns both of them. I wished I still had mine after me and a friend played a little 1-on-1 on his bigscreen in high-def :).

I think Halo 2 was better as far as multiplayer/graphics and whatnot but I will say that Halo 1's lan parties were better bar none, didnt' stop me from having lan parties with Halo 2 though.
Then I look at the single player, Halo 1 killed Halo 2's storyline. Was disappointed with 2's story so I dunno, both are good, and I still play both, on the rare occassion I play games, haven't in quite some time for some reason.
