It's a competition Gutiar Center is throwing where you could win a car plus a Gibby 59 LP Reissue, and a whole bunch of sneakers and iced teas and stuff like that.
Anyway- good for you for signing up brother. I hope you win it. And even if you don't at the very least you'll probably get to watch some incredible players and rip off their chops. Now THAT'S what the blues is all about, lol.

Hey guys, Keep us posted on how you do. John, are you signed up at the GC in Rockville? I'd make a trip down there to cheer on a fellow JS member. They do the cuts at the local GC's and then move on to regionals and finals, right?
Anyway, let us know what the schedule is.

^ I believe there's the store competitions, then the winners go to District finals, then Regionals and then National finals after that, which I believe will be at the House of Blues in Chicago.
I don't expect to make it past the first round, but I'm prepping like a warrior going in to battle. ;)
Oughta be a good experience regardless.

It's not just the blues. It's for any and all guitar players, electric or acoustic, any style, any type of music.
I think it was the year before last an acoustic guy won it. Don't recall his style though.

This one is just for the blues though this year. The 'King Of The Blues'. If it weren't, I wouldn't even sign up... there's some seriously sick shredders out there that would pwn me with a vengeance. :)
Best of luck SGshredder and Fretboardonfire, and anyone else who signs up! I'm doing it mainly for the experience myself but it's going to be fun!

That's what it's all about man! Style, feel, how you play over the tracks. Putting your own touch on something. Plus they look at skill, and ability. It's not supposed to be covers, (I don't think). It's about your ability.

Anyway, I signed up! It was weird though, I was playing through a Twin, and some kid that signed up's dad was just glaring at me when I started play some blues. I was like...Whoaaa, I think that dad might want the kid to win more than the kid does.

I'm signed up in Medford, OR. I got the last slot on the sign-up sheet.
and T-H-O-M has no idea what he's talkin' about. To everyone I hear say "all Blues sounds the same" I say "that's because you always play it the same".
One could just as easily say all Rock is the same, or all Jazz is the same, or all (name a genre) is the same.
BB King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robert Johnson, Coco Montoya, Duane Allman, and Lightnin' Hopkins all sound the same? Get real.

Well, all said and done, I didn't win. But go figure, the guy told me a lot of "kids" signed up. When I got there, it was me against a bunch of 30+'s. One guy looked like he was sixty! But it was great expierence.
One suprising thing was the fact that I thought it wasn't gonna be a big deal, just some amps moved out of the way to make a space for the contestant. When I got there, there was a huge stage in front of the door, and I was like, "Oh ****." By the time I played, the store was completely full with people watching; must have been near 100 people. When I first got on the stage, I kept going down to my knees to adjust the Deluxe Reverb, and everytime it would shake the reverb tank, which was pretty funny.
When I first started playing, I was pretty nervous. For some reason, I had this feeling that I would do so bad that people would laugh me off the stage. They didn't, so that was fine.
Anyways, good luck to all of you who haven't gone yet.

I played last night as well...twas a good experience. The regional champ from last year was at my store, as well as a bunch of pros (like Munga, I was the youngest one there). They were nice people though, especially the regional champ, who was one of the winners...name was robbie the other one was a cool guy...think his name was Jeff...I wouldn't be wurprised if either of them went quite far this year. Good thing was that I wasn't the worst there, but wasn't the best either...I tried. :)

I ended up using the Line 6 Flextone with my strat cause the Marshall JCM 2000 had wayyy to much shrill treble, and the crate palomino didn't suit me I guess. My amps sound better than the Line 6, but the Line 6 actually sounded quite nice...just not as loud as an all tube. :)

Well, guys, i didn't win, although i talked to a lot of people (Stratman, and most of the other players included) and they said i di really well. i had so much fun!!! i made a jam buddy too!! 2 people progress to the store finals. they were this older guy with a VERY pretty strat (Offwhite, tortise-shell pickguard, and some hotrails in the bridge) and this younger, college-age guy with a white PRS. the strat guy was a killer player. you can tell he's been playing for a long time, and the PRS guy had a great tone. but i really don't think the PRS guy should've won. his playing was cool, but not amazing. not that i'm all like "I SHOULD HAVE WON! WAAA!!" :p there was this guy with really long dreds that played an old strat, and he was very cool. i went first :rolleye: and played through my PODXT LIVE through a JCM2000 half-stack.
My stepfather gave me a silver pocketwatch as kindofa traditional gift for my very first competition. and we got home, and he was like, "go grab that red box in the trunk for me" and it's a Digitech RP300A pedal. i'm about to open it and give her a go. tonight was wonderful! this just might be the most fun i've ever had! beats playing to my stereo in my basement any day of the week! It was awesome meeting Stratman too. I didn't recognize him at first (my mind was elsewhere) but he knew me! we chatted a little bit, and that was great.
i also made a jam buddy! a guy who was in the competition, but didn't win either. (stratman, the middle-eastern looking guy [sorry if that sounds racist. i'm not! i swear!]with the suit on that played the black epiphone Paul) he lives in gaithersburg too, and i got his info, so we can jam sometime. wOOt!
sorry for the really long post guys, i'll put up some pics tomorrow, or maybe later on tonight. PEACE!

Ok, my $.02:
I think John did great. I disagree, the guy with the PRS was a winner hands down. But the kicker is, I thought our own SGshredder shoud have been the second finalist. I didn't like the second winner's trem work first of all. I didn't think it was smooth, too much, too fast, like turning a light switch on and off. He was also trying to show everyone how fast he could play. Ok, that's fine but it was a blues comp. I didn't think it fit where he was trying to squeeze it in.
They asked me if I would be a judge since one of the original judges begged out. I had to recuse myself since I might show favoritism to one of the contestants. I shouldn't have declined, that way the better player would have won.;)
Great fun though, everyone enjoyed it. Everybody here at JS needs to give John a big well done, since he really did great, especially for being the first one up! :hands: :hands: :hands: :hands:

Awesome man! Glad to hear you had fun.
Here's my story... and I'm sticking to it! :D
took the day off, and between the night before and yesterday I got down and dirty on the track I was going to use, Minor Baby Blues in Bb. The biggest thing was making sure my 11's were stretched out as they were fairly new. Done and done, I was prepped as prepped could be.
I had to be there at 6:30, no later. So I left the house about 5:30 and took a nice leisurely pace, getting my mind right. I got there and right away I noticed a positive energy in there. There was 8 people last night including myself, who were in it. I played 7th of the 8. I ended up having a few friends down there, one couldn't stay but the other couple stayed all night, and I ended up jamming with one afterwards for a bit. He might actually be joining our band, but it's still too early to know. I guess he picked up a tele he was looking at last night, so that was cool.
Well, then, on to the results. First off, I did not win. ... no no, don't cry. I had a great time. I actually was very happy with my performance, maybe only one bad note and that was it. I've come a long long way, plus it helped watching everyone for awhile first. But my debilitating jitters were not present last night. I strangled that guitar though during my song, just laid in to her David Gilmour style in true 'Slowhand' fashion. A lot of the others were trying to shred the blues and one kid( the runner up, playing the same one I did, did just fine). So, being that I'm not a shredder and that I didn't have a motif for that on this song I went with my strengths, phrasing and embellishments. In the end, I did what I came to do and did it well.
One guy who's son was in the competition, came over to me afterwards and told me I was his favorite. I thought that was very cool, if not a little ruthless for his son. He made a point though to come all the way across the room through the people to tell me that and I was pretty honored for that. The judges and some employees even gave me compliments, so between all that there's not a bitter bone in my body for not winning. It's actually the best way I could have had it turned out. Had I won, I would have had to scramble to figure out another track on there and they were not all that inspiring. So it was perfect. Great experience, had some fun, played in public, was very nice to have a solid success story after a lot of humbling ones, and a reason to keep it all going. My head's not swelling up or anything but it was just what the kronie kind of needed. The guy I jammed with later on told his wife afterwards "he's one hell of a guitarist."
I'm very honored to have taken part and to have done as well as I did. Only suggestion I got was to take my 2 white pickup covers off and dip them in coffee to complete the vintage look of my strat. :)

Kind of a sidebar. While I was waiting for it to start, I saw this kid in there, must have been about 15. He was playing a really nice Gibson LP. He was ok, but nothing to write home about. He and his mother go up to the counter and the guy say, ok, that's $2,500.00 including cash (it was like $2,4??.00, so I rounded up). Anyhow, momjust whips out her plastic and they walk away into the sunset. The kid isn't even grinning from ear to ear or anything, yeah, we do this every day kind of look!
Next part is for those who know the area. (No offense SGshredder).
I look at the sales guy and he smiles and says, "you gotta love Montgomery County!"
I'm still noodling around with the Jimmy Vaughan Strat I'm saving for, (damn mortgage, food, car payment, utilities, etc, etc!).

As long as you had fun, and met a few new friends along the way, that's what counts.
When I did my first and only guitar wars comp, I came in 3rd for 3 weeks, and then got knocked off the board, but still went to every single comp just to root the guys that beat me.
Major kudo's to you and Stratman for hanging out and just being.

Sounds like you had fun :)
You used track 19, too? Is it just me, or are the dynamics of that track a little odd?

Thanks guys, for tellin' us what it was like. I'm sure ya had a blast. I thought I was supposed to go on the 21st, but it's the 28th. I thought I might do the Slow AShuffle Blues, but the weird thing is, it's not in A. It's in B. I think the back track disk is pretty lame. I also think everybody but me is going to either shredding, or judging on the shredding. Me, I'm just gonna lay down de Blues like I knows how. I don't expect to win, but I plan to have fun. :)

I gotta give all you cats who played in that some huge props!
I'm in Phoenix on business and happened by the guitar center to get a book or two so I can learn some scales.
There was a stage set up with people sitting in front of it. I looked up and there was the sign for the "Guitarmageddon." I was like HELL YEAH! This is what the folks on JS have been talking about.
I stuck around and watched five guys tear it up. One kid was 12 years old and ROCKED!! One guy with a Jackson King V did some crazy Yngwie blues. All in all, I was lucky to fall into that great experience.
You guys deserve a huge round of applause.

Same here, I'd like to be able to say it without sounding like a 'tard, the scouse accent doesn't really help maters though. There's a select few people who can actually pull the word off.

Wow! More power to you. That really does take a lot of nerve, and I'm sure the competition just gets incredibly fierce as you continue! I really admire all of you who participate, whether you win, lose or draw. Good luck!

That's awesome. If there was a GC in Hawaii (not yet, but rumor has it one's coming up this year) I would have participated just for the experience.
I wouldn't win, but it sure would have been fun to do!

Can someone please give me a link or explain the rules and how this all works? I'd like to sign up, I'm 15 and an avid blues player, I live in PA and theres a GC about 20 mins. away from where I live. When are the dates and such?
This sounds like a fun thing to do, and will it sctrictly be blues like some of you who competed last year said (just read the whole thread). Any help/info would be great!

Ahhhh, damn it, you have to be 16 or older to enter, I'm only 15. Really, that is a pretty stupid rule, while I probably wouldn't win my store comp. I am still probably just as good as around half of the people that sign up. Oh well, unless I can somehow sneak myself into the comp., I'll just have to wait until next year...

hey, this is my thread from last year :D
Yeah i signed up today. There are some old tracks from last year, including Laid Down BLues, which is the one I used. I'm thinking about using Georgia Rocker this year. Still undecided though. I'll play through all of them within the next few weeks and decide. I'm showing UP this year. Last year the only reason i didn't get through was because of my tone I believe. Stratman can clarify that. I could be wrong, and I don't want to sound arrogant. But yeah, I'm getting the SRV overhauled this weekend and will be going straight into whichever Fender amp they bring. No digital POD's for me this year. :D
Stratman, you should come compete!!! or at least watch again :p
