Look at close up video shots of B.B. King!
I like to use my middle finger for vibrato, and ring finger for bending. For vibrato, I loosen the grip on my thumb so just the tip is holding the back of the guitar neck. I pick the note, and with a combination of rocking my wrist and small shakes of the guitar, get my vibrato sound. The whole motion should be side to side rather than up and down and your fretting finger should be in the center of the fret. I'm no pro at this technique, but it gets me through some blues, jazz, and surf rock songs.
Or like me, you can install a Bigsby!

I use the exact same muscles and hand position that I use to bend the string... in fact, my vibrato is nothing more than a quick succession of bending and releasing the string.
I think that this hand motion provides the smoothest sounding vibato and gives you the most control of the speed and depth of your vibrato... it takes a while to get the muscle control though.

thank you-i was holding the string down-holding my wrist tightly around the neck and trying to get this sound out-now i can bend no problem-but it's still so hard to me to shake that note and make it sing out-i suppose it takes time-and i suppose it takes a little muscle control-i'll try again!!!!!!thanks rockin'gal Originally posted by StoneDragon:

hiya rockin'gal. looks like they already helped ya with vibrato, take heart, i've spent many hours working on my vibrato and it sounds very jack-hammery and unnatural. hmmmm, i guess that didn't sound as encouraging as i hoped  . i think vibrato's one of those things comes natural and quickly to a small handfull of people and the rest of us need to work and work and get frustrated many times before it comes.
anywho, so ya like curfman. there's something very refreshing about a 14 (or has she turned 15 yet) year old girl playing and singing the blues as well as she can. she'll be quite a star.

thanks everyone-i'll be one of those unfortunate ones who will have to tear her fingers off before she gets the hang of it-as for stonedragon-shannon curfman-is very young-she has a website put out by arista records-very bluesy-and she can play-saw her on tv-and said to myself-what the heck? I'm twice her age-and i'm lucky if i can string the damn guitar right let alone do a solo with my eyes closed!!!More power to her-
but i am a tad jealous-!!!Bye!

hey stone...
shannon curfman's a young lady from fargo north dakota. she's got a blues album out called loud guitars, big suspicions. like rockin'gal said, she can play. she's also got a great voice, capable of being very sweat and clean to rough and powerful.
btw, in case anyone wonders whats with the  thing in my previous post, that was the old code for the smilie http://www.zentao.com/ubb/smilies/tongue.gif before stone changed it to trick me http://www.zentao.com/ubb/smilies/wink.gif
