this is probally the most stupid question but when you play and you are just learning and really dont know anything about guitars and you play a note on a certain fret does it tell you which string you play or do you strum it all at once?...if I explained that right...

I think i understand what you mean. When playing just a note you only pluck the string which you are playing the note on.But there are some chords which only require one finger on a fret and you strum all the strings if it is a chord.Sorry if this information is incorrect or if i didn't answer it properly.
I'm just a begginer too.

That's not a stupid question. I have gotten this one a lot in my email. I need to go back into the lessons and make it clear.
For the most part (in the beginning) you will only play the string that you are holding the note on unless you are being asked to play a chord.
With chords, you don't always strum every string. You have to look at the diagram of the chord and see if it is telling you to leave out certain strings.
If you're provided with TAB... the tab will tell you exactly which strings to play and which to leave out:
------------------------------------
---------------------8--------------
---------------------9--------------
---------------------9--------------
---------5----7---------------------
---0--------------------------------
You only play the strings with numbers from left to right. So in the tab above, you would play the open low-E string.... then you would stop that note and play the 5th fret on the A-string.... followed by the 7th fret on the A-string .... then you would play the 9th fret of the D-string, 9th fret of the G-string and the 8th fret of the B-string at the same time (chord).
Hope that helps.
