I was having trouble with this chord so I found it very easy to use my middle finger to cover all three strings and it seems to work very well. It is very hard to get all three fingers in one fret because I have fat fingers. Is this OK or should I try something else.

Actually, I suggest using your index if you cant get in all three. This will allow your other fingers to be more creative.:p

Good advice from drumstix.
You can finger a chord (such as the open A) in several different ways depending on the situation. Barring with your index across all three strings is a handy way to do it... especially if you need to do a shuffle type lick off of the A chord. It leaves your pinky free to cover the A note at the 5th fret on the high E-string also.
You can also try using your index finger on the D-string, ring on the G-string and middle on the B-string (looks like you're fingering a D chord)... I use that one a lot.
