I'm getting a stabbing pain in the end of my fingers when i practice or type. It feels like thumbtacks into the ends of my fingers. Anyone had this before, and know how to make it go away?

I've gotten that stinging at the tips of my fingers before, it just goes away if I let it be. I'm not sure if it's carpal tunnel, I thought that had to do more with numbness and pains in your palm and wrist. I'm no Dr. though. =)

it could be carpal tunnel im not saying it is 100% but the best thing to do is not play for a couple days is like the old saying if it hurts dont do it

I thought it was more like "No Pain, no Gain" :p jk

Best off stop using those fingers until the pain goes away

carpel tunnel also means your grip weakens, and your hand gets numb,.my grip is fine, and my hands arent numb.

carpal tunnel doesnt always mean your grip weakens and your hand gets numb cuz the other guitar player in my band has it if he plays to long it just hurs like crap

according to wikipedia those are two of the main symptoms. (weakened grip, numbness in hands)

My mother has had carpal tunnel surgery, and I have it to a limited degree. Yes, numbness and weakness are key symptoms, but not the only ones. It's caused by swelling of the tendons that pinch nerves in the hand, so symptoms are going to vary depending on the severity of the swelling. I, for instance, never have the weak grip problem, but my thumb and index finger will go numb if I play for extended periods. My mom, however, couln't even grip a coffee cup before she had the surgery - a severely weakened grip.

At any rate, needle type pain in the finger tips is more than likely swelling of the tendons causing nerves to pinch, causing pain.

But if you truly want the low down on it - go see a Doc.

I've been laying off the typing any playing since it started. (I sit in front of my computer all day, So I bet the typing is more the culprit than the playing.) Whether it's getting better or not is hard to say. I'll give it another week and if it isn't better, I'll try and see a doc.

I have to say though, I hate seeing those people with the fiery passion of 1000 suns. I got something similar by weight training in my right arm and I waited 3 hours in the waiting room for the doc to finally see me and tell me what amounts to, "You hurt your arm, don't use it till it gets better." and when I asked him how long it would take, he just shrugged and said, "Can't say."

if its in the tips of your fretting hand, did you recently move to a larger string? are you positive its not from overworking your fingertips before they have caliced enough?

carpal tunnel is usually in the wrist and hands with the numbness and dull throbbing pain. go see a doc if it concerns you. make sure you are using proper technique and position so you dont make it worse.

I get the pain when I type too, And it's worse when I do that. so I doubt it's the srings.

I went and picked up the guitar for the first time in a week just too see what would happen (My little brother was practicing with it and I was tempted after hearing him play.). It didn't hurt this time. I was relieved and got about half an hours practice in last night, I guess the week off did me some good after all.

I find it strange that the guitar is the one thing that DOESN'T hurt because I'll still hurt doing anythong else. And I'm still going to see a doctor.

Maybe the fingers are just made only for the guitar! :R

i play bass (with fingers not pick), and when i started i got the stinging. it hurt to play, but i did. now i can't feel the tips of my fingers, which is a good thing. my fingers never hurt since.

its kinda fun with no feeling in my finger tips, i can light my finger on fire and not feel it.
