Is there such a thing as certain chords that are used most of the time. If so what are they? Should I learn all the major and all the minor chords or would that just be an overkill? I am trying to learn to play the old time rock and roll songs.I never thought there was so many but the augmented and diminished and the 7th and the 9th and so on. This is sort of confusing if you know what I mean. Do I really need to know all this. I am not lazy but if these are chords that I am not going to use then??? Thank you again for all the help.

Another oldies fan!Right on!The classic "50's" progression is,(in C),C Am F G.Play this progression and see how many songs you can sing.More properly its the I(root),minor VI(dominant),IV,V.So in D it would be-D,Bm,G,A.Knowing Major,Minor and 7ths,will keep you busy for along time.As your skill and ear improve you can learn the others to spice ip your playing.

Hey thanks, I know these chords already but I just have to learn to put them together one after another with lots of practice. I love trying to play this thing. My brother told me to hurry up and learn because at 51 he said I dont have all that much time left, lol. I hate to put it down at night. My wife told me to take my guitar to bed with me, so I did, lol. Thank you.

I want you to know that I printed all of the pages I could find here and I re read them over and over in my spare time. There must be a couple hundred or more altogether.I do not have anyone to practice with so it has been very hard but I am getting there thanks to you.

Tell your brother 51 is the prime of life!I knew a guy who got a guitar from his kids for retirement,at age 65.Within a year he was giging all over town. With the passion you show for guitar you'll be gigin' in no time!Keep that great music alive.

Hey thats kinda cool how you can incorporate a style of music (50's) into one chord progression. I started fiddling around with the I-VI-IV-V progression earlier and it sounds good through a lot of major combinations. Although it took me some time to figure out which chords since I don't know the number thing well (counting with my fingers...one is c#...two is d#..etc...lol)

Anyway, are there other popular progressions that define the times of music? It real fun to play around with...and it sounds good when just fingerpicking notes from the progression.

Thanks
