I have comissioned a luthier to build a guitar for my 3-year-old son because I could not find one small enough that so he can actually fret chords (he already holds a pick correctly and strums) This a 13.5" scale neck. This thing is going to be *****in'! (BTW I am not paying a lot...and it will come with a hard case)

Nice. Looks like something that will become a family heirloom down the road. You cant put value on something like that.

Would love to see it when its finished.

It's very cool of you to do that for your kid. Most parents would "wait till he grew into it." Anyway, I hope he sticks with it. Make sure to post more pics of the progress.

i g2 say, that pretty awesome....

its just that it IS a bit much for a 3 year-old, but honestly, i wish i started when i was 3, it would be ridiculous right now (a good thing)

Ya, nice mother of pearl inlays

Also, make sure it doesnt become a chore for him to play guitar (when hes a bit older) that way, he WONT wanna do it

Hey, that's really neat and thoughtful.
But, I'll bet you a buck that he'll pretend it's a gun!
That's what my 3-year-old does with everything!

I'm close to starting a tenor build for my six yearold. I got him a 3/4 sized but the intonation is out.

Three year olds are incredibly clever creatures...it's their lack of language skills that throw you. I tell you from what I have experienced with my pre-schooler, they could run the country...
As opposed to the old clowns they LET do it!!

You son is going to be amazing at guitar when hes older if he sticks with it !! Make sure he gets into fast soloing.. just imagine his little fingers flying up and down the fingerboard whe his friends are trying to learn a C chord . :p pretty small neck though,lol.. when ts done you should take a picture of the guitar standing to a normal sized one

Better not let him watch any Hendrix or Townsend videos if you want it to last until his 5th birthday! :D
Seriously though, that is cool.

Very nice! I think it's great that you're supporting the little guy and getting him started early. Look at Joey!
I'm going to move this over to Tools of the Trade.
Book mark it for us so you can keep us up to date.

Yes and when he gets older he can play it like a mandolin.(If he can still fret the notes).

Wow that's really cool. I've got an 18-month-old son, and he loves to play on my guitars, but I can't let him play for more than a minute or two otherwise he gets carried away and starts smashing it isntead of playing gently.

At 3 are they gentle enough to take care of something like a custom-built guitar? I've seen a number of real cheap small guitars, even a ukelele, that I've thought about buying. Something real cheap, since I'm sure it would get torn apart over time.

That would be a great heirloom for him to pass on to his kids.. if it survives!

That's awesome. I know the tenor guitar my dad got me when I was 6 was my favourite possession for years.
