i took me a long time till i could transition from power chord to power chord. i thought i'd post this for you guys. i don't know how it is with you but i get these moments where it clicks. been working on power chords for a long time and i still couldn't smoothe them out.
then, i played this and it clicked for me.

it's called blue orchid by the white stripes. it's real easy.
i didn't tab the entire song. just the first few bars, then a bar or 2 from the middle(not power chords as you can see)

if you're having trouble with them, give this a try. maybe it will click for you too.
you can't download anymore but if you have the songbook archive, it's in there so you can run it through guitar pro.

here are the tabs

*note my killer tab skills*[sarcasm]

and here is the link to the music vid so you can hear the rythem if you don't have the song.

Excuse my ignorance, but what's a power chord?

Funny, power chords are probably the one thing that came completely natural to me. By the way, check out Little Sister by Queens of the Stone age. The commonly accepted "correct" tabs are actually way off if you see the song played live, but it's still a great song using power chords.

It's a simple chord that sounds really cool.

yeah man. i like it. it's another easy one to play. it's cool to cause it lets you play around a bit up aroung the 14th, 15th fret. thats big for me cause i usually don't go that far.
quater notes in that song right?? when he's bouncing from 15-14-15 like that...i can't remember.

i love the stripes man. don't want to turn this thread into that but i dig them a lot.i like jacks sloppy style. he's the one that made me think i could actually play.

quite a bit if his stuff is still too hard for me.

his version of son house's death letter is cool to play. it still gives me trouble and of course i can't slide any but so what you know?

I believe it's just the first and fifth (and for three stringed power chords it's another first).

I used to have problems moving the powerchords around very fast like they do in a lot of death metal. After just a bit of practice it became pretty easy though.

I came up with a few exercises for powerchords. Mainly trying to develop Mustaine's spider technique.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------
------8----7-------8-------------------------------------------------------
--7---6----5---8---6---8----7------------------------------------------------
--5------------6-------6----5-----------------------------------------------

Well that's only one, but play that in one position. I find it really helped me with Mustaine's spider technique. I also started writing really cool powerchord riffs after mastering the technique.

I agree. They're one of the few (if not the only) modern groups I listen to.

Edit> PS. Disregard the Greenday on my playlist; I copied those mp3's off a co-worker's machine.

local guitar store has "tabliture books"

$5

it's got blank manuscript, blank tabs, blank chord diagrams(boxes)

and one side tab, 1 side manuscript. just tear em out like notebook paper

kieth, they're the same for me. i don't listen to any new bands except them. well, i've listened to a few raconteurs tunes but i'm not as into it.
i just really dig the stripes.

The wacky old guitar?
No, that's been in the closet since I got my Strat!
I'll let the kids play with it if they ever get the urge.

I believe it's a Teisco!

There's no name on it anywhere, it just says Japan. I posted it on a thread asking others what it is, and the consensus was Teisco.

Viva Teisco!

a power chord is the root plus the 5th, and some people will put an octave in.

so i dont think that last ex. would b a power chord. cuz its a root plus the 6th (i think).

There are various ways to play powerchords and I used them all, what I have found for fast changes and sliding between postions quickly is the type where you just play 2 notes the root and fifth and dont doubel up,you play it with the first finger and pinky and the way your hand is angled allows for more smoothness.
You can also play powerchords on the 4th string for anyone that didnt know in this way

E-----------------------------------------------------------------------
B----5------------------------------------------------------------------
G----4------------------------------------------------------------------
D----2------------------------------------------------------------------

forget it - like entering a Formula One race on roller skates.

Powerchords require power i.e electric guitar, and more particularly to make a highly distorted chord sound cleaner.

Not true, I play them on my acoustic and palm mute and get that chunky sound right off the old acoustic.

Hate to disagree with an honorable member here, but quoting from Wikipedia :-

In music, a power chord is, in the broadest sense, a chord that remains euphonious when distorted by amplification. It was pioneered by Link Wray ([1]) and is a staple of the electric guitar.

Specifically, the term refers to the powerful and distinct sonic effect caused by the combination of two notes separated by the interval of a perfect fifth (or its inversion, a perfect fourth) when subjected to a degree of distortion, usually through adequate amplification or other electronic processing, (e.g., a fuzz box). It is sometimes notated 5, as in C5 (C power chord).

The term arose among rock guitarists, who found that such a note combination (arrived at by omitting the interval of a third from major and minor chords) allowed for much greater levels of distortion and 'power' without causing the instability and dissonance associated with all other chords played at similarly high distortion levels; while, at the same time, preserving the chord's diatonic functionality.
