View Full Version : Guitar Kits???

Okay- so I'd like to put together my own guitar at some point. What I'm NOT interested in doing (since it'd be my first) is getting the pups from one place, the hardward from another, the neck from a third, etc etc. Anyone know of a site I can order a kit from that will have EVERYTHING???

I'm talking a pre-routed body, all the wiring, pots, knobs, neck, nut, tuners, pups, strap buttons, pickguard, bridge, etc. Everything but the paint which I would want to do myself. Any ideas? Preferably a Tele-style routed for a lipstick pup in the neck, and bucker or P-90 in the bridge.

I'd check warmoth for that. If you wanted to build a strat, I know that Carvin has a great bolt-on kit.

Me and my friend are building a kit made by Saga. Its a very cheap kit though...the telecaster is 100 bucks.

Yeah, you can get all your stuff through Warmoth. You'll have to figure out each part you want and make a list of them, but you'll only have to make one order.

I've seen a few other places that have kits, but there aren't as many options as Warmoth has. Grizzly.com has them, I remember.

You'll pay a bit more than those cheapo kits but the quality is there.
Everything supplied and as you'll see there are hardware options available. Check the BOLT model guitar on their site to get an idea of what the finished product looks like.

dont use saga kits!! They may seem great for the money but they are crap!! Trust me they always go out of tune the wood is cheap soundless basswood and all hardware is made out of crudy metals!

If I were you, I would go on the 'Allparts' website. These are my fave because of their high quility parts, plus they sell genuine fender parts!!

Have fun

I'm not going to argue the quality of the kits, because they probably aren't all that good (at that price, I don't see how they could be). But basswood isn't a bad tonewood. A lot of people think that because it's cheap, but you'd be surprised how many albums were recorded on basswood guitars that had killer tone.

Wouldn't that turn out to be really expensive. I mean I've looked on there webiste and unless I wasn't looking in the right place, everything from bodies to necks to hardware were major $$$$$$

Compared to the price of an Asian made strat or a Saga kit? Yes, but the quality is higher than many of those. You're getting the same - often better - quality components that are being used on US Fenders and the like.

Building a guitar from parts is always going to cost you more than buying one that is mass produced (once you figure in labor and such). Warmoth is one of the better options (as are Carvin and especially USA Custom Guitars) if you're going to go the building route.

I've always had good luck with Stew Mac. They've got a lot of my money over the years.

damn.. those Carvin's look like nice kits; especially with everything packaged as one convenient package.
Add paint, finishing and a little elbow grease, and done!

Don't forget about tung oil :) .

How do you get the oil out of the tongue? Should make it easier to play monster licks :D
I've done tung oil finishes on a couple of guitars and it's not bad. Not as durable but easier than the regular finishes used.
