I know that this has been posted before... hell, I'm the one that posted it... so no flaming. There's alot of new people here now.
What do YOU think?
I personally liked Dave better as a vocalist but VH's music got more song orientated with Sammy.
I'm voting..... SAMMY

DLR!!! 1984 would in no way have been such a good album had Hagar sang on it. i REALLY like Sammy Hagar, but in VH i prefer Diamond Dave. a side note,i always dug the backing vocals from Eddie and Mike A,and IMHO they were better with DLR on board

I'd be inclined to go for DLR, but there is absolutely no excuse for his 'California Girls' cover...personally, I believe he should face a firing squad for his dirty little part in the production of the song and the video, however, Sammy Hagar is a hawaiian-shirt-wearing tequilla freak, so Roth gets my vote, by that, I mean I hate him the least.

I like them both. Definately different but the band had a unique sound with each. Both great singers.

Sammy for me. Sammy was the better singer and the better musician. Dave was far and away the better showman (not that Sammy was bad, Dave was just one of the best showmen ever).
But it's really about what you like. I just liked Sammy better. I thought the music was better when he was in the band (they experimented more).

Gah! I can't choose. I kind of like Hagar's singing better, DLR's, except in the early stuff, makes me cringe..but still, I like them both.

Can't decide either, it's more of who do I hate the least, VH should go completely instrumental gor their comeback tour. lol

I thought the 'songs' were better during the Sammy years.
Plus I get tired of the DLR squeel at the end of every line/sentence.

This was tough for me...I love old VH...especially VH1, women and children, fair warning...but I also loved Van Hagar (not so much 5150 but the UNlawful Carnal knowledge and ou812)
as of now I still like Sammy and think VH pimped him, and I cant STAND DLR...so I picked Sammy

I have to go with Hagar...
Hagar wasn't a bad guitarist in his own right, and if you ever saw both of them live and then seen them with Roth, you would say Hagar...
Watching Eddie and Sammy exchange guitar licks onstage is an awesome sight. No to mention Sammy had better range, when he came on board, Eddie didn't have to play in the same damn key all the time.
I liked Eddie's playing and tone better with Hagar, also...

Hagar seems like a nicer guy, for sure. Unfortunately, I don't particularly like his music. I don't hate it, but it doesn't move me.
Roth. I can't believe he wouldn't show up at the R&RHOF ceremony due to an argument about what song he'd sing with Velvet Revolver. What an ***! It just goes to show that he must be as responsible for the breakup/failure-to-get-back-together of the band as Eddie and his alchohol problems are. Still, the band rocked back in the day (Roth's day, that is).

Roth for me, I was big into VH in my teens (before I found the blues) and although I loved the pop-ish efforts of post-DLR VH (5150, OU812, For Unlawful...) none of them captured the same vibe and vitality of pre-Hagar VH... perhaps Andy Johns or whoever it was could be guilty of over-production... I thought Hagar was cool, and a far better singer (for a while), but Van Halen with DLR was always edgier, it had something the Hagar era was definitely missing.

I never thought the band was very good with Diamond Dave. His ego, his stage antics, that annoying squeal and one-key-monotone singing were always a big turnoff to me. When Sammy joined their music became more dynamic and balanced between instruments and vocals, plus Sammy can actually sing... I voted Sammy.

Dude this is the biggest no contest in the history of JS. DLR is *THE* voice of Van Halen. Van Hagar had a handful of worthy jams but Dave's over the top "check me out with my wang a'swingin on stage because I'm SOOOOOOO bad" attitude is exactly the 'tude that needed to go with the wickedness that is Eddie's guitar playing.
Sammy made them sound less like rockers, more like bankers. Kinda like Jimmy Buffett with a shredder in tow.
p.s. Hagar's solo stuff, and his tenure with Montrose, are both better than Van Hagar.

Couldn't ever stand DLR's squeal. I had to go with Hagar.

Sorry man, that's just why I can't go along with what you're saying... because to me Dave wasn't the 'tude of wickedness. He was just this big pompous ****** with a huge ego. His moves were dorky and his key of E for everything was pathetic... from the first time I watched them play I wondered where they came up with that freak and thought about how good they'd be with a real singer.
