I want to make a strat out of parts cuz none of the current models fit my specs. How hard would it be to finish a strat properly? Not a thick coat of poly but like a thin layer ( skin ) of nitro? I want to use Reranch Cans
edit; im not asking for something fancy like a 3 tone burst but I just want solid black

Well, I tried it once, and pretty much made a dog's breakfast of it. :D

difficulty depends on what you're doing and time investment depends on what you're doing

well i tried finishing a project strat with a poly finish to it. It looked like crap, also if your doing nitro its even harder! I got my strat nitroed by a pro and the 1st coat was 25 layers!! it wasn't even thick at all!

Or on the other hand, leave it all natural. Just bare wood. Your ears will thank you.

Here's the Fender recipe:
Prepare the surface
(follow the directions) six cans of black automotive laquer, with plenty of time to dry.
Buff it out, Start with 0000 steel wool, and work up to buffing compound. Use automotive sandpaper. Walmart sells it.
For a solid color, this is the easiest, and a great finish
