All guitars have at least 27 frets.
He's not usually that stupid, but he insisted on that for some reason...
And this has been done before, but we'll probably get different responses than last time so it's cool anyway.

I like hearing time and time again that "My amp is really good, its a Marshall." This is beginners with little 10 watt solid state amps, they immediately think if an amp says Marshall on it is the best money can buy. This comes from bass players too. Im fed up with it!
A guitarist friend who aint too bad (hes beyond the beginner stage) said to me "Your'e one of those people who uses lots of reverb and boosts the mids aren't you. It only sounds good if you scoop the mids." He also says SS is better than valve because "valve amps take half an hour to start up before you can play them".

this kid i work with, i had just found out he plays guitar, so we were talking about gear and he told me about this leapard print flying V he wants to buy and how good it sounds so i asked him "is it an alder body? mohagany body?" and he was like... "dude all guitars are just made from plywood." and he was serious.
i thought that was pretty off the wall.

What I used to tell myself out of self-doubt.
I would figure out something by ear...say..something by Jake E Lee...or Randy Rhoads...
Usually a rythym or section of a solo...lick...whatever you want to call it.
It sounded exactly like it...but...I would tell myself...because of all the media, and because I usually had no amplifier...so it sounded right note wise,
but wasn't as powerful sounding...
"These guys are gods...no way are you able to do what they do..."
Then I'd pick up a Guitar magazine...and look at TAB for the song.
BS if I didn't have it nailed...and some of the stuff I would never even try was so easy...I gained a different perspective on things.

let's see...all the ******** things people have told me...
single coils sound good for heavy distortion.
you need a Warlock to play metal.
you need a 75w amp or higher to play metal.
you need tabs to play.
you can't play a song in Drop D if the tab says Standard.
you can't learn a song without the tab.
the tabs are right.
the strings are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.
a power chord played in drop D isn't a real power chord.
being loud means you're heavy.
being soft means your pop.
your music is meaningless if it is not Christian.
if you're metal, you're goth or Satanic.
or psychotic.
and last but not least...you HAVE to play hardcore.
guitarists suck so bad. what a bunch of losers. *sigh*

I play really HEAVY distortion on my strat with it's single coils all the time, the output is less than my duncan buckers but it still sounds good, I've even seen yngwie using high gain amp on his guitar with single coils (stock ones, not his normal stacked buckers)

maybe it's good enough for you but for me it's a horrid sound to have heavy distortion come from a single coil. i've tried it with maybe 3 or 4 single coil pickup guitars. horrid.

Inside every electric guitar, there is a small chamber full of air with a mic. the pickups just control the string vibrations and make them sound metallic.
A bass guitar needs different instrument cables than an electric, and I had picked up a bass cable.
You can't remove the frets.
A capo is used to hold the bridge up. (Actually, now I use my capo under my Jackson's FR to keep it in level position while restringing.)
Using acoustic strings makes your guitar sound acoustic, etc.
All jazz guitarists buy the Dunlop 3mm picks.
Distortion is when your guitar runs too hot, but it'll never blow up or anything because the pickups help cool it off.
That's about all I can think of. When I started out, many "oh-I-once-played-guitar" types approached me.

The dumbest thing another guitarist told me: if you detune half a step you're going to damage your guitars. The chap who told me this really should have known better than to come out with that kind of crap. He said it in front of the whole band as well, and after he'd gone they all started rattling on about it (at the time we detuned half a step), and I had to thoroughly disabuse them of the fatuous notion!

"***? Why aren't they using distortion"
The worst requires a story.
I went to a gig in London once, the band was billed as one of the top metal bands in London so I thought "Excellent".
Went along, and the place is full of emo's, and the band is an emo band. They announce that they will do requests.....
Me: Can you play Enter Sandman?
Band: Who's that by?
Me: Metallica.
Band: Metallica, who are they?
Me: Ok, can you play some Slayer? Maybe Raining Blood?
Band: No never heard of them.
Me: Ok, just play some Black Sabbath please
Band: Who? Look mate, we only play real music.
At this point, I lost my temper, swore at the band and called them a bunch of wuss's, then an audience member (stick insect of an eyeliner wearing emo) tried to start a fight with me (I pushed him away). I then left, and got a cab to Brick Lane for a bagel.
I should also add that the "banter" I had with the band was with they're guitarist/singer.
Oh, and they couldn't even play My Chemical Romance right.

My favorite wasnt so much a stupid thing as it was a line of b.s. this 10 year old fed his father in Guitar Center (I over heard waiting for my amp) I found it cute and hilarious
This ten year old had a dean flying v with floyd rose (Dime bag something or other) in one hand and a Gibby Les paul in the other and was explaining why HE HAD to have both because he couldnt play rock with the dean and couldnt play metal with the LP...then he started catagorizing guitars "strats are for blues...telecasters are for country...Les Pauls are for classic rock..." Then he also mentioned that his marshall at home would work for the LP but he needed a Mesa Boogie for the dean...
his dad walked away (probably to kill himself) and I asked the kid if his dad was buying it...he told me to shut the hell up (while laughing) and that he REALLY wanted both guitars...

I've had the same EMG 81 pickup in diffrent guitars, and I get completely different tones from each one. I installed the 81 in my Ovation ultra hardbody and I love the tone I get from it, so I installed an 81 in another one of my electrics (BC Rich virgin) which I've sold since then, but the tone I got out of that thing was not even close to the same that I get on my Ovation. The way I look at it, the resonation of the string thru the wood is going to be picked up by the pup, and all wood resonates differently, other wise, who would care what type of wood a guitar is made from.

Well this isn't really anything dumb that a guitarist said, but how he acted so dumb...
Back in 8th grade, there was this kid who everyone had known had been playing for two years, but he had never really talked about it until the beggining of 8 grade. He would talk EVERY day about these new "hard" songs he was learning as if he was the only guitar player that could play them. So, one day he actually brings in his guitar (electric) and a small amp. He then has the actual nerve to ANNOUNCE to a bunch of people (including me) that he would be playing a little after school if anyone wanted to come see. About a third (40 people) and me show up in the room where he was going to plug in. So he sets up, gets ready, and plays NOTHING but PARTS of three Nirvana and Metallica songs and the strumming part of stairway. Thing is, I wouldn't have cared had he not practically made a public service announcement about his littl performance. He plays the MOST cliche things after hes been playing for 2 years AND says hes going to basically show off to anyone that wants to watch after school.
See, hes one of those players that went to Paul Green's school of rock, and thought/thinks that it is the "real deal". Seriously, these kids who sign up for that get basically custom guitars, and amps (of their choice), to play Nirvana and (poorly) covered metal songs on. He would brag about that to. He said that no guitarist will ever be as good as Kirk Hammet. He also, finally finds out about Cream (the band) and goes on about them to everyone like hes the only one whos known of them (despite me and my friends knowing about them for 3 years prior).
You all know guitarists like this. But for me personally he was the biggest a-hole of a player that I've ever met in my life. Sorry for the long post.

"if you plug your guitar into the headphone jack of your amp and play, you have to replace the tubes immediately."
"medium picks are for blues...hard picks are for metal"
"you cant play blues on a les paul. its for ROCK!!"
"that acoustic looks nice, but i would never buy an acoustic because its REAAALLLLLY hard to get distortion" i swear to god some kid told me that. i almost cried

I don't have a stupid remark, but i do have a funny story:
I used to bring my guitar every now and again to school back in 8th grade and i had this little pick pouch thing that i carried around with it. Well one day this one kid took it and was dangling it in front of my face saying i suck and asking if i wanted it back. I just kept playing for a bit then finally grabbed on to his nipple and twisted till his knees were on the ground, head down, and pick pouch in one hand extended to me while the other attended to his bruised nipple. He tried to get on my nerves a lot but that pretty much stopped it. Man it felt good.

wow with all the emo idiots in our school who think they can play guitar, i could go on for days
today i was told by some kid
"my band is a drop c band"
i've also been told
"you may be better, but you take lessons and i dont, so that makes me better"
funniest thing ive heard come out of, every kid in my schools mouth is
"i'm a great guitarist!"
sure you are little guy, sure you are.....

That's the funniest thing I've read all day, and I'm reading Catch 22 right now. Good job.

Once this kid who knew more about guitar than me, confused the terms "nut" and "bridge" like reversed them. He told me his guitar had a floating nut. I believed him, cause I knew nothing. I went to guitar center and asked what a floating nut was. They laughed at me.
I heard some pretty messed up stuff about music back in the day too. A kid I knew told me Green Day had better guitar playing than Aerosmith. This same kid told me black guys couldn't play guitar. I nearly vomitted on him I was laughing so hard.

I had floating nuts once after a trip to Thailand. A quick visit to the free clinic cleared me right up. :D
