i like that list. better than the others i've seen. i think SRV should be higher up though. Andres Segovia deffinately deserves top dog. Vai should also be in there somewhere, or maybe i missed his name? Steve Morse should be a little higher up as well because not many people play like he does.

These lists are always subjective and as such, are subject to draw the ire of folks whose pet guitarist is not listed.
It really is a relief though, for once not to see average joes like Slash and Ace Frehley getting lumped in with the likes of Wes Montgomery and Joe Pass.

Well, I think you are judging the list based one wrong criterias.
I'm not to defend the list. I also think there are some strange choices in them.
But it helps if you look on the criteria each list is based upon.
100 Greatest Guitarists (All Genres)
Criteria: - These are the 100 greatest guitarists of all genres of music and styles of guitar. They were picked
for their importance in the guitar world including innovation, respect from other guitarists, influence on
both other players as well as on styles of playing, impact, legendary status, and overall importance on
shaping the guitar world. Plus for the playing abilities including technique, creativity, versatility, musical
depth & expression both in composing & performing, live energy and improv skills, and originality.
100 Greatest Rock Guitarists
Criteria: - Guitarists are ranked for their impact, influence, creativity, versatility,
originality, technical skill and lasting popularity in the genre of Rock guitar.
100 Greatest Hard Rock/Metal Guitarists
Criteria: - This list is compiled of how the artist is: creative, versatile,
technical skill, discipline and technique, not based on popularity.
100 Greatest Blues Guitarists
Criteria: - This list is intended for those guitarists who exhibited a clear 'Blues' thread
throughout their careers. It reflects their impact, influence within their genre,
and musical expression in addition to technical ability on the instrument.
100 Greatest Jazz Guitarists
Criteria: - These musicians were chosen for their originality, versatility, impact & influence within the genre. For their innovations & the technical ability for improvisation & musical expression in addition to their compositional skill & creative inspiration.

I think these are good lists. I don't really buy the rankings (one wonders what criteria they rank by???), but to say that each of these belongs on such a list is not a reach at all.

I don't agree. Its kind of stupid to be comparing people who are so different. We don't need a list of people from all genres, it would be better to have seperate lists for different genres, just so we're not comparing Apples and nuclear fission. ???

some of that list though is just wrong-rory gallagher was not in there enough, and was not in there high enough and robert johnson is not one of the 20 best guitarists ever.i understand that these polls are subjective but some of that is just plain wrong :D
and duane allman is at number 48?!!no sense at all!!!

I think those lists are all good, provided they all have this caveat -
They are in no particular order.
Those are all great guitarists, but putting them in order would only indicate one's own musical preferences.

Santana, Blackmore, and Brian May in the 140s? Someone doesn't know guitarists....and why is it David Gilmour is always in the 80s? He should be top ten IMO.

Mick Taylor > Joe Perry?
:rotf:
I'm sorry, but you're wrong. Joe doesn't even deserve to lick Mick Taylor's boots. At least Mick Taylor has never been in a band that wrote songs for proms across America.

Oy, lists are so funny because people will always be disagreeing with the opinions of the numbers and names on any list.
I think these are good lists. I don't really buy the rankings (one wonders what criteria they rank by???), but to say that each of these belongs on such a list is not a reach at all.
I agree with the lists being GOOD, minus putting numbers on them. The names are very plausible while the order of preference is not really something I'd put too much consideration into.
I was thinking, "Oh they're gonna put Django Reinhardt at number one". I was almost right. I myself don't like him, but I understand his influence on countless musicians.
