ive been getting a couple messages asking me what a 59/60 transition les paul is.

ONCE APON A TIME, in the nashville gibson factory, pre 1959, the necks were very thick and un profiled, so one day the little manger guy put in some money and bought all new cutting blades, so the neck was very thin, and after seeing this customers liked it so much that gibson had to take those blades away in order to keep up with the demand quota. so the necks have been SEMI-reproduced in special edition LP's, but really none have had that TRANSITIONAL STAGE neck since about 63.

O RLY?!

Prove it.

One flaw of your story that immediately jumps out is that the Gibson factory in 1959 was in Kalamazoo, Michigan, not Nashville, Tennessee.

Secondly, the super-thick '58 Les Paul neck is a myth. The necks were largest in order of '58, '59, and then '60 as the smallest, but not the difference that Gibson has on the Historic line. A slightly thinner R9 or slightly thicker R0 neck is the closest to the average Burst neck. The varying neck sizes on the Historics are either to give some variety for different people who like different sizes, or because the people that carve the necks in the CS don't know what size necks Bursts had.

Third, neck profiles were hand carved back then. Buying new "cutting blades" wouldn't magically give the guitars a new, thinner profile. That would come from the person working on the neck simply shaving and sanding it down until it's thinner.

Fourth, single-cutaway Les Pauls were discontinued mainly in '61, with the exception of very few early '61 single-cutaway Customs IIRC. So what are talking about with "none have had that transitional stage neck since about 63"? Do you mean when the SG necks got beefed up a little for added stability in '62?

Sorry, man, but it's a story with basically no truth to it.
