In the near future I am going to try build a guitar - Just a body at first.

I am wondering what tools I should invest in?

I already have a power drill and saws.
I will buy a router and a lot of sand paper, maybe an orbital sander.
I dont think I can afford a bandsaw, would a Jigsaw work ok?
A chisel for the neck joint?
G-clamps?

What else is nessecary? I dont have a load of cash to spend on tools, so the basics will have to do.

I want to make a strat or superstrat based shape with a carved top on it.

I know there are some Kiwis floating around on this forum, so I was wondering if any timbers from NZ would be any good for a body, or even just the top? Because the grain on rimu is amazing.., Any thoughts?

Also if any NZ'ers catch this thread... I live in CHCH, what are some products I can use ie, glues and finishes? Where should I get them from?

What are good timbers to use for a body? I'll have to get the wood from somewhere first.

Cheers

I used an angle grinder on mine a lot for the overall shaping of the body.

A good measuring tape is a must.

well a router is essential, and loads of bits too!

an electric sander should be enough... rasps and surforms help in shaping the body!

i thought an angle grinder was used on metal??? maybe try and get a hold of a drill press, because they make much nicer holes than a handheld drill.

Are we talking acoustic or electric?

I wouldn't use an angle grinder to make an acoustic!!!

Chisels, router for binding and pickups

LOADS of clamps.... I use G clamps, butterfly clamps (like big clothes pegs) and the one handed clamps that work like mastic guns.....

I use masking tape to hold binding on til the glue dries.
