I am planning to go to an exotic wood shop in Cape Town this friday with my dad so I can choose some woods for the body of my guitar... !

It's gona be really sweet, just I need some advice as far as what I should be looking out for in the wood that I choose...

>>Are there any "pencil-tap-like" tests that I could do that would help me understand how good the woods tonal properties are? ie. what should I be listening for if i give it a smack?

>>Should I go for denser / lighter wood?

>>Coarse / finely grained wood?

>>and finally I'd appreciate it if u guys could drop some names of good woods so that if I find them I can sorta see what I'm looking for...

The guitar I'm planning to build is something like this:

Thanx for the help!

I'll keep you posted on any progress I make ;)

Alright!!!! Just got back from my outing and found a BEAUTIFUL piece of Kiaat wood, which is a rare african hardwood...

It's really stunning. I'll post some pics as soon as I've worked it a bit - it's really dirty atm.

Here's a sneak preview lol :

Oh, and I scored a piece 1000 x 210 x 50 for roughly R60.00 (around $8.00!!)
