Dragon Force, Necrophagist and Stratovarius are the 3 I was most impressed with.

I've absolutely no idea why I took so long to discover stratovarius. I've been into "power metal" for a long time, and knew of their existance for years, but for some reason never had a listen to one of their albums. I eventually got one, and now I can't believe it took me so long!

I really haven't found a ton of music this year. As far as 'new' bands go, I really like The Sword . As far as rediscovering older music, my favourite CD I bought this year was "The Instrumental Hits of Buck Owens and His Buckaroos".

And on the bizarre side, I listened to Manowar so much as a joke that I actually started really liking them now :rotf: . I even bought a DVD they put out.

I have had real problems finding new music I like though the last couple of years.

Alisson Krauss came here earlier this year; I got 2 tickets for the show and gave them to my wife and her mom. They enjoyed it a lot.
She does have a great voice, but I'm not really into the genre.
OCMS is good too... the wife got into them last year. I don't mind them at all, but don't know that I'd actively seek them out.

Tommy Emmanuel, when some muppet posted a "Woodsongs" vid in the Unplugged forum sometime in January, last year. I was kinda stunned to say the least...

Heard recently he played in a venue an HOUR'S drive away from me, and I did not know it. When am I gonna get an opportunity again to attend such a gig? Like the next Solar Eclipse!!! :p

Steve Knightely and Phil Beer blew me away at a gig recently, consummate musicians, found out they hailed from the same town El Hubbo was brought up in...some massive magic happens when they jam with Martyn Joseph...

Went through a little Michael Hedges phase...

Just recently someone got me into Gabriel era Genesis and King Crimson. Very interesting stuff there.

I ended up getting back into Japanese Metal, and thus finding Psycho le Cemu, even if they're more pop-metal than the usual Gothic stylings. Plus, Aya's cute.

I've liked the few Avenged Sevenfold songs I've heard. Can't say much for their visual style or band names (Synester Gates? *groan*) but musically it's pretty close to the japanese style so I can deal.

And on a final note, I'm pretty sure learning to get good at Expert mode Guitar hero is MUCH harder than actually learning how to play guitar. Seriously.

in all sincerity, i have picked up MUCH more from the players on this forum since i joined than listening to'signed' artists. i have a wah wah lick from hell i picked up from Mr Boston, Gavb gave me a good lesson in musicality, Lazy Bee reinforced with out the song its nothing, Crow Barr and Fretboard on Fire reminded me its not always the number of notes you play,or the speed you play, but WHAT you play,as well as not using the same tones in every song. Jose Curervo taught me how authentic blues SHOULD sound , Plain G gave me a great lesson on playing and singing at the same time, and made me reflect on my shotcomings in that area and Bassman showed me that playing from the heart is a musicians BEST attribute. thanx for a great 2006,and i'm REALLY looking foward to 2007!
