Depends, are you talking about real emo, or the modern misnamed group of bands that are generally and wrongly classified as emo?

Edit- You've just added a poll, and none of those bands are emo.

AFI - Goth Rock/Alternative
Green Day - Modern Pop Punk
My Chemical Romance - MTVemo/Modern Pop Punk/Rock
The Used - Modern Screamo/Post-Hardcore
Panic! At The Disco - Pop
Kisschasy - Pop Rock
Taking Back Sunday - MTVemo/Moder Pop Punk/Rock
Bullet For My Valentine - Metalcore/Post-Hardcore
Good Charlotte - Modern Pop Pink

bullet for my valentine is the only band up there I likem even if they aren't emo. and real AFI is punk, recently they've become pop punk, and are now called emo.

AFI kills them all easily. Bullet For My Valentine are pretty good too though.

I said AFI because out of the 3 of the bands up there I have heard I like them the best. I really have no idea *** emo is. Apparently no one is :D.

i'm sick of everything getting called emo...its so annoying, i never knew what the word really meant and now it means nothing anymore. green day was around way before the word emo was ever invented.

BizzyP

green day was around way before the word emo was ever invented.

That's not exactly true. The real emo movement began in the late 1980's in Washington DC. Green Day were around before the modern MTV-false-emo movement though.

Well, though I must say that NEW Greenday definately IS emo, old Greenday is not. I had a hard pick between MCR, The Used, and AFI. Then I narrowed it down to AFI and The Used. But with AFI, I really only listen to old AFI and like it alot better than new AFI. And old AFI isn't emo, only new AFI is. So I picked between new AFI and The Used, and I like The Used better. But if it is between old AFI and the Used its AFI no contest.

(Sorry if that was kind of confusing)

I don't see why you guys don't just leave the thread... band x might not be post-empo hardcore oppo punk shuffle blues funk but guns n roses are a one hit wonder 80's pop metal band that was only succesful because people found it amusing that the entire band was formed by transvestites.

One hit wonder? Haha, Sweet Child O' Mine, Paradise City, November Rain, Welcome to the Jungle, etc... seems like more than one hit bud.

Wow lol, you tried to insult me because I help with a record label. That kind of back fired eh? ;)

Shouldn't be so arrogant if you don't like it when people say something back.

EDIT: Oh, you're 14... that explains a lot.

I wasn't judging "you", just the mom comment, was typical and expected from a younger one... kind of made it all make sense.

I help them by promoting them in my signature and occasionally posting stuff in Promo Pack (online atleast... and radio requests, and hitting up music stores with posters... and hitting concerts with posters, you get the idea)... I don't have to fake my opinion about the band, just not my taste of music. It back fired because it was a weak insult, lol.

OH the mom comment. I originally put tattoo cradle of filth on your arse but I figured that wouldn't fly with the mods...in fact this thread won't. We hijacked the hell out of it. I'm gonna leave, seeing as how you won't...

doesn't it seem like every time you turn around there are 50 new ones??? And they have tons of devoted followers who have been that sub genre for years and that 90% of bands in that sub genre are posers and their correct sub genres have either the word post, grind, or core attatched to it?

Yeah, genre theory to the X. Oh, btw, Pop is a generalisation not a genre, like it or not, Slipknot are pop, Trivium are pop, Led Zeppelin were pop, pop is infuriatingly misused lately.

pop means popular. I guess all of those bands are pop. At one point Megadeth was pop. Metallica was pop. Black Sabbath was pop.

So you're calling me emo?

You relse cutting isn't just emo's? It's a mental dissorder. They use it as a release as you would by keeping depression bottled up inside because you're too 'macho' to talk to somebody. Maybe you should stop calling people emo if you don't like sub genre's, and maybe you should stay the hell out of threads unless you have some intentions of a useable post.

Sub-genre much?

I think its necessary to sub-genre to an extent. I've seen AFI simplified from what i described them as to simply punk. Now when i think of punk, i think of Sex Pistols, Ramones etc etc. I can't really compare them with AFI. Different styles, but somewhat related which is why i think i need to sub-genre.

well comparing The Ramones to AFI is like comparing Black Sabbath to Korn. Sure, technically they are the same genre...but they really are nothing alike.

But what i'm saying is that the ramones and AFI are NOT the same genre. Years ago AFI could have been considered punk, but now they are definately not.

Say for example i was describing AFI to someone who had no idea about music. I might just quickly classify them as punk just to keep it simple for them. But if i was going into more detail with someone who understood a bit more, i'd want to classify them a bit more accurately.

I do indeed like AFI. My favourite band.

Okay, Metalcore, to put it simply, is pretty much almost just metal, except maybe not always as technical as some metal can be, or not as brutal and unaccessable as certain types of metal. It still uses technical riffing, screaming/roaring etc etc trademarks of metal, but can include more frequent singing than traditional metal and is pretty much more accessible to people just getting into metal. Metalcore lately also tend to have breakdowns as well, which were previously a hardcore thing. It is really quite similar to metal, and some of my friends call it "I Can't Believe It's Not Metal." Bands could include Bullet For My Valentine, It Dies Today, Unearth etc.

Post-Hardcore is closely related to the real emo movement in the 80's, and also to the Hardcore punk movement of the 80's & 90's. It's actually a bit hard to describe so i might just direct you to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post_hardcore and give examples like Thursday, At The Drive in, The Blood Brothers. It's usually pretty raw and emotional, sometimes with low production values.

Now im sure for most people, they're happy to just lump it all into metal and punk, but i'm sure a lot of people as well like to group bands together with similar bands like that. I find that when that happens its easy to find other similar bands i might be into.

Goth Rock/Alternative
Modern Pop Punk

Green Day - Modern Pop Punk
My Chemical Romance - MTVemo/Modern Pop Punk/Rock

Kisschasy - Pop Rock

And what facts do you have to call me emo? Have you read my diary? I'm keeping it so I can oneday reflect on the good and bad times during my teenage and young adult years. Something to give to my kids one day.
If you wanna call me an emo go ahead but don't do it through a forum say it to my face...Ohh yeh you probably wont ever meet me...when you do then if you still think I'm emo then you can call me it. For now go **** yourself.

BLS wasn't always mainstream, and I didn't like the new album aside from the piano ballads. Heavily advertised = us doing our job.

I like some of the bands, just not all them. Regardless, I do what my boss tells me to. If I worked a grocery store and didn't like noodles, the boss told me to put them on the shelves.... am I going to say no? I didn't think so.

JCM 800 Full Stack... was step dad's, given to me as a birthday gift... almost **** my pants, though he still has his sweet 900, which I like better lol. Stays in the jam room / stage!

Marshall AVT50HX Head... bought a few months ago, matched with one of the 800's 1960 cabs

Peavey Blazer 158... given to by a cousin.

Epiphone Les Paul... given by step dad also, when I started out! With EMGs of course.

Ibanez Les Paul... step dad brought it home cause he knew I was in the market for another LP, gave him the cash afterwards, deal was good. This thing ******* rips for being like 30 years old. EMGs too.

No name acoustc... given to by my brother after he quit about 6 months in (this was actually his account for awhile). He recently started playing again and is playing my step dads Dean.

MXR EVH Phase 90... got a few days ago on sale.

MXR Dime Distortion... got a few days ago on sale, same days as EVH.

MXR Wylde Overdrive... got awhile back, love it to death.

Dunlop Hendrix Wah... got a week or two after overdrive pedal, love it.

Boss TU-2... got it for Christmas.

Boss NS-2... bought for $50 used from a kid who quit.

I don't think I left out anything... ****, there's so much **** here it's not even funny. I used to own the Jackson, but my step dad wanted to buy it from me, haha!

hey vio howcome you like the jcm900 better? i'm pretty curious cause I may be looking out for one later...alotta people say the 800 is THE 80's metal amp, is there a whole lotta difference between the two?
I don't know what it is... just the kind of tone I want. I mean, the MXR DD-11 (Dime distortion) is amazing on both. But with the 900 it makes it sound like it has more balls. If I can get some cash and find an amp tech I might see if I can get the 800 modded like Zakk... that + his MXR pedal is what gives him his wicked tone. Maybe for my birthday, lol.

On the note of the axes... nothing was on sale. The only ML's they had in stock were the crappy Dime ones... like the plain black one and camo one. Didn't like them at all. The only way they get higher end in ones in is if I order it, but I have to give them the cash up front... how would I know if I liked it? **** that. The Zakk axe wasn't there anymore, but they're getting more in and the camo one aka the one I want! Selling for $955... so maybe next month if I don't blow my money.

Hah, I've paid for pedals, 1 guitar and a head.

Well, 2 guitars, but like I said I sold him the Jackson and bought the head with the money, lol.

So you're a spoilt brat...Ohh I'm starting to see what your problem is.

You should try hanging out with Bam Margera he seems like your kind of person.

Spoilt? Haha, nice spelling. I'm not spoiled, I have just a good hearted step dad who saw I was taking the hobby seriously. He's been playing over 20 years, and the gear he gave me wasn't being used by him.

If I were spoiled I wouldn't have worked at a grocery store for 4 months, data entry at a local plant for 6 months, at the same time being a freelance graphic / web designer (still am), or work on the promotional side of Roadrunner Records (hoping to eventually work in the office in Toronto). Nor would I help out local stores / public places with any PC problems.

If you don't want me in the thread, a good start would be to quit trying to insult me. Goof, the only thing you're good at is making yourself look like a moron.

anyways, in hoping to get this back onto a good topic...

10 months where I had to go to the job, yes. Freelance graphic design comes at anytime I find a client or a client contacts me. $75-$1k a project bud. Oh if you only knew something before you opened your little mouth, you'd be so much better off.

SG dan, I'm using old school models, I tell you the exact ones tomorrow (jam room is locked up for the night). The 900 definetly has more gain though, that's why I like it more. Has more punch.

Care to read all the replies? I've said why you are an emo kid... I swear you don't know how to read... or you choose not to acknowledge you're wrong and a complete tool. That's your choice, but if you keep opening your mouth (or typing in this case) you'll keep fueling the fire and I'll keep making you upset.

You have NOT made it clear why I'm emo. Because I am NOT emo. If you look through the 'who are you' thread you'll find a photo of me. I'm pretty sure I don't have black hair, nor am I wearing black clothes cept for the manchester united jumper. I also have a smile on my face.
