ok, I know there wouldn't be a SRV version without Hendrix but if you were an alien and didn't know who SRV and Hendrix were but you'd heard both their versions of the song whos would you like more?

Love Stevies version, but Jimi's had just a bit more energy and feel into this particular song IMO. So I go with Jimi's version.

SRV played it way better

SRV I think he played it cleaner, and I like his style better in general.
When we're finished with this, we can compare it with the exact same poll done before:

Mr. Vaughn for the win.

I go with Hendrix's version. And yes, SRV was a cleaner player, but Jimi played it with more intensity, and emotion. Don't get me wrong, I love the SRV version, but i could never say SRV was at Jimi's level of playing.

Chile, not child.

Partially correct.

There are three songs with similar names which cause alot of confusion.

1. Voodoo Chile - A fifteen minute jam by Hendrix, featuring Steve Winwood on hammond organ, on the Electric Ladyland album.

2. Voodoo Child (Slight Return) - The famous Hendrix song, off the same album.

3. Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) - SRV's cover of the above song.

As to which I prefer, I dunno.... Vaughan's has a tighter, cleaner, head-nodding groove to it, but Jimi's has more passion and emotion IMO. I much prefer Jimi's vocals. More magic.

Jimi, hands down. Stevie played it much cleaner and took it to a new level, but I like the level Jimi played it at more. I like the sloppy feeling, I think it fits the sound of the song.

Id have to go with SRV as well. It has a thicker tone, which makes the song sound better to me.

SRV just gives the song such attitude and fury - it towers over the original.

Priesty

SRV's version was probably a little more neat that Hendrix's, but I love the loose feeling the song has and the way Hendrix seems to leave it open to do whatever he likes, where as the SRV verison seems somewhat constricted to me....

I do love them both though..

This also why its the better version...When Steve got the gig playing...There was no rehearsing music or notes..There wasnt anything written..Hendrix walked out of the room and said something to the session musicians like......"Hey You Cmon In"......It was then recorded while Hendrix sang and played one the same cut.........If you listen to this version close you can even hear the groupies in the same room.....This is why Hendrix will always win...Cause he was the man...Off the cuff and all natural.......

What about Harry Manx's version on the 6 String Banjo???

It is actually pretty cool...

Ain't no such thing as who plays it better. All a matter of individual taste. SRV just added his own personal touch.

If you've heard the numerous Voodoo Child (Slight Return) versions from Jimi during his live performances, then you'll know that it's all about his energy and ideas as he was jamming away, and the same applies to Stevie Ray.

All the Hendrix covers that SRV does are fantastic. Little Wing is incredibly much more fantastic than Jimis' version

Another hard pick.

Original and cover both super great. Love them both.

As an alien I think I would pick Hendrix by a milimeter.

As myself I think I would pick SRV by a milimeter.

Well, this is kind of hard for me as they both sound good in different states of mind. So, I guess:

Stoned-Jimi
Straight-SRV

That's pretty much what I think.

Jimi.

IMO, no cover can be better than the original. SRV may have had a cleaner, thicker sound, but if Jimi's wasn't clean, then shouldn't it stay that way? Why change what's already perfected?
